We've been on a streak of stumbling on really great movies from the 1980s. Recently saw Dead Zone, with a young Christopher Walken. Nobody's Fool with Paul Newman. Moonstruck with Cher.

These movies are written like a really good play. Lots of local color. We've seen the big 80s movies, but it would be great to get some more obscure recommendations from that time period.

Midnight Run

Also, pretty much anything at all that has been remade this century that originally came from the 70s or 80s, you’ll see the reason why it was remade to begin with is because it was such a good movie. But you’ll still think the remake is utter crap, because it usually is.

Also. Die Hard.

Empire of the Sun 1987

"Jamie Graham (Christian Bale), a privileged English boy, is living in Shanghai when the Japanese invade and force all foreigners into prison camps. Jamie is captured with an American sailor named Basie (John Malkovich), who looks out for him while they are in the camp together. Even though he is separated from his parents and in a hostile environment, Jamie maintains his dignity and youthful spirits, providing a beacon of hope for the others held captive with him."

One of the best movies ever.

Just one more, it is a 1979 movie that is still a great watch with Martin Sheen and a bit of Marlon Brando:

Apocalypse Now

Fast Times at Ridgemont High and all of the Porkys movies are classics. Also, the original Total Recall was from 1990, but it is so good it is close enough.

One of the few recent movies (I am old) that touched me very deeply. The music plays in my head to this day.

Highly, highly recommend this movie, too.

If you like a good drama / thriller / conspiracy flick try Sneakers with Robert Redford (from '92 but has the 80's vibe to it)

The goonies (comedy / adventure, 1985) for the kid that's still in you

2010 The Year We Make Contact (Sci Fi, 1984) : a not well known sequel of 2001 space odyssey (Kubrik)

Videodrome (SciFi, thriller, 1983)
