Why is it so hard to reconcile the idea of people being motivated to do things solely because they want to, and not for any particular gain?

Because, they are humans and want to keep getting PAID. Failure to follow the base lie is suicide.

It's called "learned behavior."

But that's not really an answer. The supposition is if people had all their needs taken care of, what would we do with our free time? I recon that many would still be scientists/engineers/firefighters/soldiers/etc simply because they want to do it (lets just say out of the sheer joy it brings them).

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, insomuch as are you arguing that getting paid is a learned behavior, or that our desire to be rewarded monetarily is a learned behavior?

DING DING DING!!

Yes, it is an answer. Show us please where socialism has worked. Once. Please. You can't because it never works, because you are taking away the reason for someone to enhance their living arrangements. When you turn people into sheeple, they will eventually rebel.

Handing people free stuff is NOT the answer. A vast majority of people would simply take the income and free house and would never try to excel. Why should they? Will becoming an engineer have any meaning to them?

Let's say the base income for everyone is $20K a year equivalent.

So, BMW's won't be around any more, and neither would any other upscale cars. No one would buy them. Will they be issuing Chevy Volts to everyone, and banning all non gov approved cars?

So, more and more people unemployed getting that base growing.

I'm sorry, this may be the most Naive post that I've ever responded to.

With all due respect I suspect you feel its naive because in an ironic twist the same Mental constructs that give you such assurance that you're right are blinding you to alternatives. By the flip side I am no better, and although I'm aware that my position is partially dependent on my own worldview I endeavor to reconcile this by posing my thoughts/arguments against those who disagree with me (which is probably the primary reason most of us participate in ATS political forums)..

Just because something has been a certain way for a long time neither makes it right or the only way. For example, in your reply about people not endeavoring to do ANYTHING without a monetary reward, you are neglecting my earlier point that some folks do stuff not out of selfish reasons, but rather altruistic reasons. I'd even make the argument that much of what plagues the worlds societies now is based upon the axiom of selfishness/greed = right.

If I had food/healthcare/housing taken care of, I think I'd probably try and go do something that would have the greatest benefit for humanity (now that I no longer had to worry about taking care of me and mine).

I mean, we have learned from watching others do things solely for personal gain and not for any altruistic notions. It's become the norm in politics (and in pretty much everything else in America).
