Article said they lined the path to what was probably a ceremonial court yard. Sheesh. I hope in 800 years ‘ancient’ tropes get better or else archeologists will insist we parked our cars in ‘ceremonial chambers’ connected to our houses.

It’s like how everyone acts like native Americans can talk to animals.
Why is it that everything ancient, that they have no clue about, is explained as ceremonial or religious? Maybe they just...(hold onto your clay masks...wait for it...) hung out in that courtyard.

There's a word for the tendency of archeologists to attribute religious meanings to unidentified artifacts, but I don't remember it off hand. But it is a recognized thing that happens.

I'm still going with kinky furry party.

Or maybe they liked to play poker, and didn't want to have tells.

Most of the time, it just seems archeologists are grasping at straws, and use religion as a default.

Well, it kind of makes sense. If you have an object or building that doesn't appear to serve a practical purpose you have to wonder what it was built for. Something important, probably, or they wouldn't have gone through the trouble. This is particularly true when there are human or animal figures involved. There's some sort of social value to these things, even if we don't exactly know what it is.

Those aren't the kind of figures you'd expect the crawl out from under your bed in the middle of the night and eat your soul at all, nope, cuddly little bastards, ain't they?
