California company wins Airbus contract worth $billions

Good news for folks over in California, Goodrich has won a big contract with Airbus.

CHULA VISTA - 02/24/05 - The Goodrich Corp. has said that its Southern California-based Aerostructures Division will make key parts for the initial version of the new 245-passenger Airbus A350 jetliner.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the work comes under the terms of a contract that the company has valued as high as $6 billion over the next 20 years.

The Goodrich unit, which has about 2,000 employees at its Chula Vista facility near San Diego, will develop the engine housings - called "nacelles" - and engine thrust "reversers" for the new EU-designed passenger plane, the paper said.

This should also work in Airbus' favor as more jobs created in the US could result in more acceptance of Airbus products.

Thought Airbus was french.

bussiness is bussiness , misguided patriotic sentiment is folks on the streets that get their opinion spoonfed from dubious media...

Buit no doubt there is some reflection of Bush visit in Europe paying out, I already predicted the USA and French government would settle their bussiness (=not ideological) differences "out of court" and willl negotiate how to divide the new african oil resources, BEFORE it will stir up new costly conflicts like in iraq...

You would think given how closely tied the company is to the E.U. governments. France also pushed for thier CEO and tried unsucessfully to move him into the EADS chair position as well.

Airbus is owned by EADS 80% and BAE 20%

Back on topic:

This highlights the global nature of conglomerates. Production of the NG 737 actually created more jobs in France than did the A319 (I think I have the type correct).

The 787 will have a large percentage of it build overseas.

Both Boeing and Airbus have almost become a systems intergrator. That is they put the puzzle together with pieces from all over the word in one or two locations.

Well heck, a G.E./PW joint venture is making the engines. So when ever "national" pride comes up in these Airbus discussions its kind of moot. The plane is made everywhere.

Why do yopu limit it to 'these Airbus discussions', as you put it. Its true of every major aerospace programme in the world today, especially the Boeing 787 and even including the F/A-22, but to a much smaller extent, (BAE Systems is involved with the Raptor, google "BAE F/A-22" for some results.

I dont dissagree with that, I just thought the discussion was regarding the Airbus.

What does it say for America when we have to outsource our airline production to Europe.

God knows what else.

Especially when our countries beleifs are so different. I dont approve of this and would never fly an airliner that used an airbus anywhere in their lineup.

At least I know the current airliners are supposedly built from specifically American technology. Enough said. Bush I could care less about doing this to bolster the Euro trash's economy or relations. I dont agree fundamentally with their country, and I definatly dont agree with all the foriegn backed American companies that are everywhere. They are slime.

I am having a little trouble figuring out who you are angry at, who the "slime" is. Clarification?

Goodrich is a specialist in aerospace and has been for years. You pick the best suppliers out there are their own merits. We live in a global economy - no longer do "local" resources have to be used, especially if there are better ones out there further away.

Now, Airbus v Boeing, you take your eye off the ball and someone builds a better product - end of story. Sure 757 is faster but A320 is more comfy and a whole lot less time to plane-deplane. I still like 777 and 747 for long haul flights and I'm one that always picks my flight based on the type of plane. Boeing also makes more money in the less competitive satellite and military sectors - they made the choice to do that, Airbus did not....

CRJ's are like little hotrod's but very cramped - and well the 737 is like a VW bug, it works and keeps on working - nothing to shout home about though....

A320 = Ford Excursion
757 = Supershuttle Van
737 = beater taxi
CRJ = Boxster

OK, here's a few Airlines to avoid:

Air Canada, Air France, America West Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, jetBlue Airways, Lufthansa, Northwest Airlines, Ryan International, United Airlines
US Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways

There are many, many more Airlines that use Airbus, I just listed a few.

BTW, you may want to stop using FedEx and UPS as they both use Airbus planes.

Yeah - fly Southworst - the airline of rookie flyers everywhere. Kinda like Walmart, cheap and dumbs down everyone else to their level but they sure make money, just like WallyWorld....

Whats weird is how like 3 weeks ago this company didnt exist and they get some kind of permission for this company to setup shop in Californa to get this contract?

Are all the workers going to come from overseas to to work in California? Or are they all going to be built overseas in European factories and then sold through this front company in California?

I dont approve. This is diluting our country's integrity if you ask me. And I dont see the need for them to instead just buy them from whatever European country that is supposed to have proposed the plan.

Oh well hopefully it isnt like the Concord. *laugh*

I would say that while Airbus is a European consortium and there is a good deal of Dutch developed Glare material in the A380, it's clearly the French that want to steal the spotlight with it, having the major assembly plant in Toulouse etc..Hell the French would even sell these planes if they made huge losses with it. French is wannabe superpower with a big emphasis on wannabe, but you got to hand it to them, the ariane rocket, the scalp cruisemissiles, their own nukes, it's all because of the WW2 post-traumatic stress that they had this feeling: never again be humiliated and so the french quest for national pride was born...

You are right about France wanting to steal the limelight and having most of the assembly plants in France is a big part of it. It was this self same attitude that led to them being thrown out of Eurofighter (or more accurately the Eurofighter partners leaving and setting up somewhere else without France) but thankfully both programmes have survived, prospered even, despite it.

If I was to take the British side (naturally) I could say that anyone can build a metal tube with seats in it but without the super advanced and efficient Hawker Siddeley/BAE designed and manufactured wings it wouldn't be half the plane it is.

Of course its more complex than that but we can all take national pride from the brilliant Airbus line.
