Strange in my twenties I never had that issue.
I was the queer with the long hair.
If anybody had an issue, the entire bar would jump to my defense.

But now my hair is short, I look different.

Dude do you have male mates in real life who you trust and can banter laugh with?
I was with my best mate earlier, he's got some issues going on with his bird but it is expected for me to take the piss about something to cheer him up with a laugh. I follow up with heartfelt stuff as well of course, but as a male it is my job to take the piss as a mate.
He was close to death one time with some horrible infection and first time I got to see him at the hospital I told him "Stop #ing milking it and get yer arse up" both chuckled as it should be lol.

My society has become better in my lifetime.
I remember the days when wife beating, gay beating, and racist beating (Paki bashing) was common, heck you could rape your wife in the UK up until the early 90's legally.
Society has become a nicer place in my lifetime for sure. I can only speak for my corner of England though of course.
