Thanks. It was described as the rear nose gear door, so if that's accurate, I really want to know how the hell they pulled that off.

Sounds like they Jack knifed it.

It sounds like it, but IIRC the towbar has shear pins that are supposed to shear before that point. And the aircraft is marked with the farthest you're supposed to turn before that point.

Apparently they arrived in Sydney without a -135 towbar and had to use local equipment which was too big.

funny how people reckon instruments of hate, war, death and misery, are things to be admired?

I wonder if these are the same people who put miller terry uniforms on, on anzac day?

From what I have seen the tow bar for a 135 is the same or at best slightly bigger than a 737 bar. Yes the shear pins should go and I'm wondering if the 135 is heavier and that therefore a 737 bar might snap and somehow cause damage. Best scenario I can think of is that they were in a sharp turn and that when it failed it came loose and collected the aft door. Ill find out tomorrow what I can.

I think it has to do with them being maxed out on fuel. They sit pretty low when loaded.

Shouldnt there be a weight loading table on the towbar?

Not generally, no. The bars are supposed to be rated for the max ramp weight of the aircraft they are designed for. I have towed and pushed back a million aircraft and cant recall seeing a weight chart on any of them.

I had an ask around today and while nobody I asked was aware of the incident, I was told that if one was to accidentally tow a 707/KC-135 aircraft with the doors open you WILL contact them with the towbar in a turn. The person who told me was smiling from sheepish experience.

Two F-35s and a KC-30 will leave Arizona this week. The first leg will take them to Hickam, then on to Guam. The KC-30 is in Phoenix now.
