WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is preparing a “series of actions” in the coming days to increase pressure on the Venezuelan government, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News on Friday.

“You’ll see in the coming days a series of actions that continue to increase the pressure level against the Venezuelan leadership folks, who are working directly against the best interest of the Venezuelan people,” Pompeo said. “We’re determined to ensure that the Venezuelan people get their say.”

He did not give further details on the nature of the planned actions. Venezuela’s information ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Pompeo’s warning comes ahead of the annual United Nations General Assembly ....

U.S. preparing 'actions' in coming days against Venezuela: Pompeo to Fox News

Well, there you have it. Our foreign policy leader Pompeo is promising action. Whether it simply manifests as more sanctions revealed next week at the UN General Assembly or as another failed assassination attempt is yet to be seen.

Supposed assassination attempt of Venezuela's president

This announcement was on the same day that the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu expressed his disapproval on sanctions against Venezuela during a meeting with his counterpart Jorge Arreaza in Caracas on Friday.

Perhaps there will be sanctions on prime beef and high end cigars, since his people can't afford those anyway.

We've been waiting for this for a long time. We had to do it even before Maduro, when Chavez was there.

Maduro is so ignorant that he not even understands the meaning of this measures. I see invasion as the only way.

an invasion is unlikely. What is more likely is a limited assault by the Colombians based on a real or perceived threat from Caracas with US air support. Of course an event like that could only unfold if the Colombians were given a bit more motivation, say perhaps a terrorist attack on Colombia or on Colombian interests by Venezuelan backed guerillas.

I can see a scenario like that leading to direct confrontation. Otherwise, it will simply be another attempted internal coup. Again, this is only the theorized chain of events if this statement is implicating direct action. This scenario ir null and void if the actions to be taken are simply more sanctions.

Of course, sanctions eventually lead to direct action anyways, so time will tell.

I'm not sure I like this. I mean, this is a sovereign nation. Sure, the leadership sucks, but how would Americans feel if the UK or Russia or China announced that they thought that our leadership was ineffective and were going to put pressure to effect regime change?

Seriously. It's worth thinking about.

The people are starving and fleeing from Venezuela in massive numbers, affecting places like Columbia. The money is worth less than toilet applet, Yes, it’s time to bring capitalism to the Venezuelans.

Yeah, gave Chavez cancer and then it started truly spinning into the abyss down there. Like everywhere else Neocon Policy (self-fulfilling prophecy) is perpetrated. Good going.

You should bitch too. How many millions in other little dirt poor nations have to die for the imperialists to stoke their egos? How many "terrorists" have to be created in each of our names? How many nations should we scrub off a 'travel the world bucket list' because they HATE US (and for good reason)?

All when its none of our effing business how other nations handle their BS.

All when we cant afford it.

Let them rot because we’re worried what everyone thinks about us. Luckily the administration won’t fall into such snobbery.

Or you could liberate the people from tyranny, stand up for the oppressed where everyone else refuses to.

Isn't that what we did in iraq?
It's time to stop interfering and let the rest of the civilized world handle this one..

We cannot go to isolationism, because then the Chinese end up on our back door, knocking saying "little pig little pig, you better let me in. Or I will huff, and I will puff, and blow your markets in!"

This is the way it has to be. Somebody big will always be knocking. I would prefer to be in the shadow of the big guy knocking on doors away from our home, than the shadow of the big guy knocking at our own door from far away.

It really is a shame this is the way the world has to be, but that is the price for humans having free will. So with that said, if Pompeo is smart he will make sure that Venezuelan guerillas take the heat for an unprovoked attack in Colombia, and together we can free the Venezuelans from such #ty government management. And you know, it does not hurt that there is a bit of oil to help pay offset the cost of such an operation that the Colombians would have to take to ensure their own border security.
