To all liberals and leftists of ATS please watch this brief 6 minute video and offer an opinion if you agree (in general) between the distinctions made between a liberal and a leftist. I'm genuinely curious what the responses will be.

They both suck, communist at heart. They should all just move to Venezuela and fix things under a president Sean Penn!

Wouldn't they rather move to one the 10 happiest places on Earth that are also socialist nations? You know, healthcare, college, etc?

Venezuela isn't the only socialist nation on Earth but conservatives love to use it as an example of what socialism brings which is just stupid.

Are we supposed to ignore when socialism fails?

It'll be EXTREMELY interesting to see how many of the Leftists, especially the ones who consider themselves to be "cough* um, *cough*, intellectuals, *cough*, chime in here and set the record straight.

S+F, my friend.

It's OK. We'll wait here...

I think we should pay more attention to the hundreds of times when socialism has been such a raving success...

LOL...the old "socialism has never been tried!" argument. Well...here you go mate...

Failed Socialist States and Movements
Venezuela
New Zealand
Canada
UK
Singapore
Hong Kong
Chile
Japan (a very interesting case of a country whose economy was stagnant under nationalism, and then boomed from imposed- liberalization, and then was stupefied in a Keynesian experiment gone mad)
West Germany (where the "German economic miracle" was sparked by a single man abolishing wage and price controls against the wishes of the American, French, and British occupiers.)
Estonia (whose young Prime Minister reformed the post-USSR economy based on suggestions in Milton Friedman's Free to Choose)

And here are the officially socialist and formerly socialist states and former states.

I did not include whether or not current socialist states are either failing or growing at a significantly slower pace than less socialist neighbors but it's pretty easy to guess which ones are: all of them

Current Marxist-Leninist countries include:
China (soft-landing)
Cuba (in progress)
Laos (80% of population works in agriculture, one of the lowest annual incomes of any country in the world. 1/3 earn below $1.25 per day)
Vietnam (I'm sure the government here is very much aware I just googled this to get that wikipedia page) (soft-landing)

Former Marxist-Leninist Countries

Afghanistan (1978-1992)
Albania (1946-1992)
Angola (1975-1992)
Benin (1975-1990)
Bulgaria (1946-1990)
Cambodia (1975-1989)
Congo (1975-1992)
Czechoslovakia (1946-1990)
Ethiopia (1974-1991)
East Germany (1949-1990)
Hungary (1949-1989)
North Korea 1948-1992 (in 1992, all references to Marxist-Leninism were scrubbed. Remains generic "socialist" state)
Mongolia (1924-1990)
Mozambique (1975-1990) (my mom who is Portuguese lived here during this time)
Poland (1945-1989)
Romania (1947-1989)
Somalia (1969-1991)
Soviet Union (1922-1991)
North Vietnam (1945-1975) (then they won the war)
South Yemen (1967-1990)
Ukraine (1919-1991)
Yugoslavia (1945-1992)

Anybody else notice a trend with the Marxist-Leninist countries?

Non Marxist-Leninist Socialist Countries

Bangladesh (1971-)
Guinea-Bissau (1973-)
Guyana (1980-)
India (1976-)
North Korea (1992-)
Nepal (2015-)
Portugal (1976-)
Sao Tome (1975-)
Sri Lanka (1985-)
Tanzania (1964-)

Former Non Marxist-Leninist Socialist Countries

Algeria (1963-1989)
Burma (1962-1988)
Cape Verde (1975-1992)
Egypt (1958-2007)
Iraq (1968-2003)
Libya (1969-2011)
Madagascar (1975-1992)
Sudan (1973-1985)
Syria (1963-2012)

None of that was "real socialism".

What's "real socialism", you ask?

Everything but what you listed.

I apologize. Seriously.

As much as I bow to the Lords of Sarcasm, and make no mistake, I bow. Sometimes with a great wailing and gnashing of teeth. I do, however, on occasion, fail to see it in other member's posts.

I'm at your mercy, Sir.
