The scary germ that was plauging parts of asia is a threat to the States according to the Feds. Officials at the CDC remain concerned that the virus will mutate and be able to cross infect from birds to humans soon here.

The CDC is "extremely concerned" over the "very ominous" threat of bird flu, CDC officials say.

It's not a new worry. Public health officials have been worried for years that a particularly nasty form of bird flu — H5N1 influenza A virus (search) — will learn how to spread easily from human to human. That hasn't happened yet.

If it did, the impact on world health would dwarf the SARS (search) outbreak, says CDC medical epidemiologist Tim Uyeki, MD.

Nature continues to find new forms of culling the human herd from the planet. It seems unlikley that this strain developing would have as wide of an impact here in the suburban/urbal dominated life in the USA as it does in rural asia where theyve wiped out entire stocks of fowl to stop this bug from spreading.

But, if this bug did get into the general populace and go thru cities, we could see many hundred casualties from it easily before even the watchful authorities warning about this now could realize where and how it got going and ways to limit it.

What are the ods, and how concerned are you about this?

With flu vaccine shortages already evident this year in the USA, youd think this new and seemingly more deadly flu would be attracting more attention.

There is now another almost identical post created hours after this one on the exact same subject...

At this point I am complacent about it. Although the threat seems real enough, enough to the point of the WHO and CDC making announcements about it, until it actually jumps species I don't think there is any reason for panic.
With that said - if and (when) according to the CDC this does mutant and jump species (us) then I think they are right in their concern of a pandemic. All it would take would be some person at the beginning of being ill or not even know they are ill at that point to hop on a plane and go to another destination and BAM it starts to spread globally. You also have to consider that if this does break out in Asia or another country people will begin to try to leave in droves to escape the illness and at that point they may be carriers and again it spreads globally.
Because everything starts out with flu like symptoms how long before the WHO and CDC discover that this is the big one and starts to quarantine the areas?
As far as it affecting the US? There is a good chance of the happening. People travel to remote destinations. Vacations are coming up and school will be out soon. Who's to say someone from our country wouldn't bring it back here? Something to ponder.
