Some employees tried to resume what they could, but otherwise a total loss....

BRASILIA (Reuters) - A 200-year-old museum in Rio de Janeiro was hit on Sunday by a massive fire, images from television station Globo showed, threatening its collection of more than 20 million items ranging from archeological findings to historical memorabilia

- because cultural programs based in 200 year old buildings are never underfunded

some reports indicate that there were no fire suppression systems of any kind in the building....

Also, the fire hydrants outside the building reportedly weren't working, or had low water pressure, so the fire department really couldn't do much except stand around and watch the building burn.
