A TEAM of scientists have identified a new brain cell thought to be unique to humans found in part of the brain linked to consciousness.

Source

MUCH of the human brain remains a mystery to scientists. It’s the reason we sit at the top of the food chain, but the question of what makes our brains different to other animals remains a somewhat elusive one for neuroscientists. Research continues to provide answers however, and this week a new study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience identified a new and mysterious type of human brain cell. The newly identified brain neurons have been dubbed “rosehip neurons” because the surrounding dense bundle of nerve fibres resembled a rose that had shed its petals. The cell type has been added to a short list of specialised brain cells that may be completely unique to humans and perhaps other primates. The cells have not been seen in animals used in the lab and display “anatomical features never described in rodents,” the paper says. The research involved scientists from the US and Europe who gathered evidence over several years and was lead by researchers at the University of Szeged in Hungary and the Allen Institute for Brain science in Seattle, USA. They ran complex sequencing experiments on tissue samples from the cerebral cortices of two male brain donors. Interestingly, the cells were found in a region of the brain that is thought to be responsible for consciousness — one of the most fascinating and enduring mysteries in the field of neuroscience. “It’s the most complex part of the brain, and generally accepted to be the most complex structure in nature,” Dr Ed Lein from the Allen Institute said, in a report by Science Daily.

Well, I sincerely hope that I have none.

The team of scientists think the new-found neurons may play a role in brain disorders.

To test this theory, scientists reportedly plan to study the brains of donors who had psychiatric disorders while alive.

Scientists say that "dark matter" is a property of space and space has amazing and unknown properties. I think our brain is also amazing, with so much of it being a mystery. Since I believe in God and God is eternal; I believe part of us is eternal too. Somehow, we're linked with the Universe, as well as with our Creator. I've always felt that our consciousness is linked, not only to each other, the Universe, but also also to the all-encompassing consciousness of God. Maybe these new brain cells act like some sort of transmitter, that somehow connects are consciousness to a "universal" consciousness.

“I do not feel like an alien in this universe. The more I examine the universe and study the details of its architecture, the more evidence I find that the universe is some sense must have known that we were coming”

However, it could really help prove why "some people" are really different..............ahem. Cough.

There are also spindle neurons. These are only found in intelligent species:

Ooh! I want some new brain cells!

Mine keep hurting from dealing with the stupidity of the general public.

It's not located in our arse is it?

Coz that would make a modicum of sense.

Don't know about that, think there was some speculation as to a second brain of sorts being located in our stomachs no less.

The LGBTQ community came to mind when I read that. Hopefully they can sort these people out.

Sadly this gene is missing in a number of prominent politicians.

I would almost bet the two brain donors were current members of ATS. Many of us are special in that way, you know.

It almost makes me wonder if my own brain is that special.

Flower child brain cells that were created by hippies of the sixties?

New and possibly unique human brain cell discovered

...... introduced into the human genome through vaccines in an experiment to create short lived black babies, babies from poor families and anyone with undesirable social or political views...... (just a cynical comment but one wonders.)
