Lol, I know what the word means and why it's called permafrost. I just thought you were trying to explain to me the global warming part.

It was almost a rhetorical question. I'm no scientist, but I think blaming (or crediting) global warming for this discovery may be a stretch.

So did the permafrost melt because the earth got warmer or colder?

It sort of is a global warming thread. That's why the horsey showed up.

Because the planet is warming.

I think this global warming trend will be short lived.I am concerned with
all of the volcanic activity around the globe could block the sunlight and
bring about a major cooling event.

Is that supposed to be a trick question? If logic serves me correct, pretty sure ice melts when the temperature warms past a certain degree.

Yes. And as Phage pointed out, perma in the word permafrost means permanent. The ground is supposed to stay permanently frozen even in summer months. Therefore as the global mean temperature rises these permafrost areas are slowly thawing out. The rise in global temperature is called global warming.

You can’t debate facts. Facts are facts. The fact is, the earth is warming. Also, about 98% of scientists agree that this current spike in global warming is caused by humans.

So when the ice in my cup melts, can I attribute that to global warming as well?

Are you comparing ice in your cup to permafrost? Yeah genius argument, you got me..

It's actually quite genius if you think about, but don't think too hard.

The horse was dug out of the permafrost, which was still frozen.
It was a hundred feet down and was found when they were digging for mammoths.

While it's true that the melt goes deeper and deeper into the permafrost as the Earth warms, this particular find was not made because of melting permafrost.

The surface layer is not permafrost anywhere. The depth to reach permafrost in the arctic is usually dependent on latitude, but is also influenced by elevation.

C02 is on the rise.

But if this graph is correct, are you really sure that it is not just a cycle that the earth goes through? It seems that the temperature dips regularly and is followed by a warming spell as usual, even while CO2 was in decline.

There's a hockey stick at the end of that graph!
