this is an interesting one to discuss seeing how everyone these days is so sensitive.

people.com...

A woman may have lost her NASA internship following a profane Twitter exchange with a member of the National Space Council.
On Wednesday, user @NaomiH_official excitedly announced her new job offer. “EVERYONE SHUT THE F— UP,” Naomi H wrote. “I GOT ACCEPTED FOR A NASA INTERNSHIP.”
Her big news caught the eye of former NASA engineer Homer Hickam, who commented “Language” underneath her tweet.
Naomi then replied, “Suck my d— and balls I’m working at NASA.”
That’s when Hickam, 75, revealed his identity. “And I am on the National Space Council that oversees NASA,” Hickam wrote.

As for why Hickam responded to Naomi’s tweets in the first place, he explained it was only to protect her future.
“I’m a Vietnam vet and not at all offended by the F-word. However, when I saw NASA and the word used together, it occurred to me that this person might get in trouble if NASA saw it,” he said.
“So I tweeted to her one word: ‘Language’ and intended to leave it at that.”

seems pretty silly to me.

do you think she should be fired for this?

was it vulgar? sure

was it funny? yes
to me anyway

Ha...I read this one a few days ago. He is apparently now trying to help her get her job back.

She got what she deserved. She should have known who this "suit" was! IF you are going to work for NASA have some respect and don't act like an idiot. Sure what she said was funny if it was to a friend but to someone AT NASA, no it's not funny. She should be embarrassed.

Lol, people are daft with what they put out on social media.
I think it reflects a wider issue of folk presenting themselves online in ways they never would face to face at the pub.
I see it all the time, even on ATS, people giving it all the hard guy aggressive tone when it is needless.
The only people I see like that in real life are the people nobody likes.

"Suck my dick and balls" would be basically offering someone out for a physical fight in my community, crazy how brave folk are safe behind a screen, I wonder how many even interact with people outside of a screen anymore the way their rudeness comes so naturally and quick.
They've never had a punch in the face...many people need to experience it to temper their behaviour or tongue in my opinion.

I think its just a sign of how out of touch a 75 year old Hickman is! This type language is typical everyday speak for vulgar people and the majority of younger Americans are extremely vulgar. They don't really know any better although its also the case that many of them, I suspect, enjoy and get off on insulting people, especially "older" Americans who they hate because, well..........they're old. Everybody hates old people, even me who's "older".

Okay, so my BIL works for NASA but it never occurred to me whether or not he uses profanity on his social media accounts so I checked them out.

Guess what? I found very, very little profanity, and NO use of the "F" word.
He's at work now or I'd ask him about it.

My personal opinion though is that if she plans on tagging her future employer on social media she might want to keep the cussing to a minimum!

Her conduct was unprofessional and her vocabulary as limited as many of her generation. She is not at the local slut locker soaking up beer with her friends; she is trying for an internship possibly leading to a career with an agency of the Federal Government.
She is just another twitter twit that doesn't understand that internet content will follow her to places that she doesn't want it to and may adversely effect her years later.

Imagine if POTUS said, "Suck my d- and balls, I am President of the US"...he would lose his job right away.

Same goes for her...very unprofessional.

I don't think this is PR that NASA wants to see of them.

Dont talk about the job on Twit-ter

She sounds dumb, whats most appalling about this story is that she somehow passed some sort of review/hiring process and was accepted.

Stupid people are generally VERY easy to spot, sometimes they don't even have to talk you can just observe them for a few minutes.

IMO, this looks worse on NASA's part then on her.

You don’t get to run around acting like a complete idiot and expect to get all of the privileges that come out of a society that has been built on rules and thought. This is an example of a smart woman being a piece of garbage to the wrong person and getting what she deserves. Just because you work hard doesn’t mean you get to disrespect people.

I wouldn't call her smart. There's more to being smart than being able to remember some facts and regurgitate them on command like a parrot.

One of the foundations of intelligence is how one conducts themselves and how they control themselves. She obviously fails at that. I don't care if she has a 4.0 GPA, shes objectively/factually stupid.

I don't mind her first joke. But her response to the guy was over the line. In everyday life I could care less. But when representing yourself as a professional in a prestigious position, to the public at large.

“Suck my d— and balls I’m working at NASA.”

Is not an adequate response. It is not so much about getting your panties in a twist over some swear words. It is more about having the knowledge and foresight to navigate your chosen career.

No, people are ridiculous. Honestly, f* isn't even a terrible word anymore, it's standard vernacular in any song playing on the radio.

Even if it's an oh so terrible word adults should be allowed to say it.
Even people that work at NASA

Operation paperclip. Bring in the Nazis.
Just don't say #

I think it was more about her being super disrespectful than the actual profanity used though.

The fact she wasn’t aware that it’s common workplace rules/practice these days to NOT post your companies name, logo.. She doesn’t deserve a second chance. (But I kinda hope she does and I’ll explain below) I worked in management in a factory In the Midwest and spent 21 years there. All employees signed documents about social media. Like most companies, we had zero tolerance for rule breaking and ignorance. I once moved an employee from a job he couldn’t perform then a couple hours later my assistant runs into my office with her phone saying, “look at this” His fb post said, FML, hate my job, my boss is a #! Tell me that # ain’t funny! I didn’t fire him tho and I didn’t want to. Any other boss would have had him escorted out by security. I also knew (like we all know) social media gets passed around so freakin fast! The HR manager called him at home the next morning and told him not to return. Oh and another one, had some kids having to much fun playing at work one day, clear in the back of the shop #ing off and one decides to pull his phone out and recorded the horse play and uploaded it to fb for all to see including a locale OSHA rep that spotted a potential safety hazard that cost the company lost time and production. As for the intern, would be kind of exciting her working at a top secret government business and doesn’t know she shouldn’t record things at work and post it online somewhere!!

I wouldn’t want someone like that working for me or representing my company. I would have fired her. There are much more intelligent and effective ways of representing yourself than using profanity.

I don't think it was F--- that was the problem. It was the sucking of the d--- and balls, NASA has a professional image to protect. They aren't going to let it be tarnished by some incoming rookie. If she shows that kind of judgement on how she conducts herself publicly then NASA also can't take a chance she shows similar poor judgement in a future multi billion dollar mission.

Normally this wouldn't bother me....

However a government agency fired her for using her freedom of speech.

Sounds like she got her rights violated.

No. Making an ass out of herself is fine. Making an ass out of herself while representing something is not. Most companies would fire her for that too.

Yup...turns out if you want to get professional jobs it's ideal to act professional. Telling someone to suck your dick and balls i work at nasa while tagging #NASA so NASA can see it is fairly unprofessional. I mean if she stood outside NASA and yelled that at somebody she'd probably lose her job too. Twitter, facebook the internet in general is a public place, if you do stupid # in public places bad things happen.

ETA...also, with the way laws in america work, telling someone to suck your dick and balls could be technically construed as sexual harassment couldn't it? Pretty sure south park did an episode about that.

Since the incident, Hickam said he and Naomi H spoke privately about her future with NASA.

“She reached out to me with an unnecessary apology which I heartily accepted and returned with my own,” Hickam wrote. “After talking to her, I am certain she deserves a position in the aerospace industry and I’m doing all I can to secure her one that will be better than she lost.”

Hickam concluded, “I have also talked to the folks that had to do with her internship and made absolutely certain there will be no black mark on her record.”

Synopsis: 75 year old overreacts to the enthusiasm of a 20 something year old. They hug it out and lessons are learned.
