I don't think releasing tax returns is necessary. This is one of those things that sounds good to those who really don't know anything about finance, wealth, etc.

First off, tax returns only measure income for any given year. They tell you nothing about the wealth of a candidate. Income is what you earn in a year. Wealth is the assets that you control. Only income, interest, and dividends are listed on tax returns which may give you an idea of what assets someone holds, but it is only a small snap shot.

If truly ferreting out corruption and conflicts of interest is the goal, then there needs to be tighter disclosure laws along with more detailed financial disclosures. In addition, there should be some strict independence requirements. I worked for a major management consulting firm and we were barred from having holdings (or had to disclose) when we held any kind of interest or loans with any client that could be a conflict of interest since we were privy to Board level decision making before it was public knowledge. This was done annually.

Second, truly wealthy/rich politicians have nothing to gain from this politically, particularly given class warfare politics and biases. Only politicians who have not been super successful financially or held rather boring/plain careers would not be harmed. For example, Elizabeth Warren was just a professor and author. Her tax returns would be fairly straight forward. She only made a couple hundred grand a year in w2 wages at Harvard. She could have her taxes done by TurboTax or some non-CPA tax preparer at H&R Block.

On the other hand, truly wealthy folks who might be worth say $50 million, $100 million, or even billionaires would have their tax returns picked apart and spun by opposition to show something nefarious to an ignorant public jealously of the wealthy. If these candidates had equity investments and received "carried interest", significant capital gains, and other sources of investment income, opposition would come up with all kinds of ways to smear that candidate.

The typical stupid voter would just hear "So and so has a lower tax rate...", "they have investments...", "Trust income to hide...", etc without really understanding the complex financial issues and why things are done certain ways.

What would happen is that people who are thinking of running for office would start to prepare by structuring their finances to avoid scrutiny or not look controversial from a political standpoint.

LOL I don't know about US tax returns but Australian returns don't include names of entities, just summaries.

So what you all want is all his complete business records? LOL.

I've got zero issues with the Clintons and their foundation getting investigated.

Zero problems with Warren and her Indian DNA

Unlike people that take issue with trump being questioned on anything.

The question is how many taxpayers has he screwed over with his real estate deals.

So they had no recourse through the courts. Oh wait they entered contracts with eyes wide shut.

I thought you Americans were all for the rule of law and capitalism. Sounds like some want their money back or a free " commie " socialist handout.

Uh, trump has been doing business with, none other than RUSSIA, for decades. Your damn right I want to see them, and as an elected public official, he should be obligated to show them. Also trump is the one who said he would show them, as soon as his "audit" was up. Why should he not be expected to KEEP HIS WORD?

Do you have some sort of insider knowledge that whatever "audit" is done?

I was audited once and it took almost 3 years to clear it up....and I can assure you my tax return is much less involved than his.

Have you read Warren's yet?

Trillions aren't missing, they weren't accurately described in line items, health care is through the roof, unemployment is comparable to other developed countries and you're dead right wars are fought in corporate interests.

Yes the masses can't see the forest for the trees, but I can bounce around issues.... It's fun.

This whole issue about tax returns is, for lack of a better term, horsesh*t, and I've explained why many times.

And the worst part of it is, this is probably Warren's prep for running for president. That would be funny.

Doing traditional things for the sake of tradition is a waste of time. That's what this tax-return issue is: Tradition for the sake of tradition. You learn nothing important from tax returns about anything illegal or otherwise, at least not in the way that the public can discern. The IRS reviews all tax returns for concerning issues and things that don't look right--if they find nothing, what do you think that you'll find, SG?

The answer is nothing but red herrings and fodder for distractive accusations that have no foundation in fact. But, that would satisfy your ideological appetite, wouldn't it? And you wouldn't be alone, unfortunately.

I wont be satisfied until I see a vault copy of Mr oranges birth certificate.

I've got an expert who will be able to verify the authenticity of those tax returns ya know? He manages the local Staples and he's seen it all! All Donny has to do is release those returns and my bud the expert will verify.

What about Warren's? Would he tell you they are worthless because they aren't signed?

"Real Indian" running against Sen. Elizabeth Warren defends sign calling her "Fake Indian"

For over a month, the upstart candidate's campaign bus has sported two identical signs emblazoned with the words, "Only a real Indian can defeat a fake Indian." It's parked in a lot just a mile away from Warren's home. The signs also feature a side-by-side composite photo of Ayyadurai next to an eye-catching Photoshopped rendering of Warren in a Native American headdress.

wow
you cant make this stuff up

Well I know you arent reffering to me, who said trump should release his returns.

You asked who else was really wealthy like trump that ran and seemed shady.

The clintons seem to fit the bill.

They don't mean anything. However, it would be easy to spin anything found in them as nefarious to idiot voters who don't know any better. See what happened with Mitt Romney when he released his tax returns. It gives ammunition for Democrats to use class warfare tactics.

Remember this when Romney released his tax returns... look at the headline:

Mitt Romney Releases Tax Returns - Paid 14.9% Rate

The implication is that Mitt Romney is this uber rich guy who doesnt pay his fair share. Of course this ignores the different types of income... From the article:

Romney’s 379-page 2011 returns show that he earned $6.8 million from capital gains and $3.6 million in interest. Romney earned about $190,000 in author and speaking fees, as well as $260,390 for sitting on the board of Marriott International. None of his income was from wages. Capital gains are taxed at a flat rate of 15 percent, substantially lower than the 35 percent rate typically levied on the wages of those with the highest incomes.

Investment income is taxed lower because the money received from investments has already been taxed and that money is being risked in the market. Average voter making $60k/yr working 9 to 5, doesn't really understand the reasoning behind different tax rates, so they latch on to the percentages the Democrats throw around.

Of course, the $4 million they gave to charity gets glossed over... and no one will mention Joe Biden given a whopping $367 to charity.
