Why do private messages loose format - become one paragraph - when sent?

When I type out a message, I use paragraphs, but when I send the message it shows as a single large paragraph and I'm guessing the recipient looks at it and thinks "I'm not reading this, a crack head wrote it...".

What's the deal?

They appear that way in the sent box, but after they're read, if you go look, they're formatted correctly.
