Trolling was always cool. And funny.

What made trolling bad is the internet became mainstream and the 'casuals' started misusing the word.

Trolling was an art. A form of stand up comedy. It is aimed at entertaining everybody, well except for the person who takes the bait if they have no sense of humour.

Real trolls are not "garbage cowards playing tough guy behind a keyboard", those are just plain arseholes and have their own terms like "Keyboard warrior" or "jerk"

Trolling was posting in all seriousness that "the sky is red", and having that one person, the unofficial and involuntary "straight guy" of your comedy act, usually some noob to the net, take the bait and discuss in length why you're wrong and "the sky is blue" as you add more and more outlandish claims to proceedings as you go.

While everyone else can see what is happening and everyone gets a good giggle. Even the 'victim' if they have a sense of humour.

So yeah, trolling has always been cool and bragworthy if you're a good one.
It's the misuse of the word that is uncool.

But hey, words are always evolving. Usually through people who have no idea what a term actually means, who are usually part of a flock of sheep that just echo each other.

Damn used to have a large troll thread that would of been a great example of real trolling on a site that is now gone.
Everyone was talking gibberish and stupid and this one guy came along and addressed us all seriously.
Was hilarious stuff, especially after the penny dropped with him and he saw the joke.
Damn I wish I had screen shotted it.

Posting on ATS "HILLARY/DONALD IS A NAZI" or having a different opinion to someone, or just being an a-hole does not a troll make.

Seriously you say anything now that is not mainstream feelgood echo chamber PC nonsense, give any opinion that is not someone else and people automatically call you a troll.
Yep, it's a term misused and abused.

So to correct you OP, maybe you really want to ask, "When did being an arsehole keyboard warrior become cool?"

I must say the amount of Pots calling the kettle black in this thread is hilarious and accurate, yet also proving his point.

As long as Victorian minded idiots keep believing that the internet is both a valid form of communication and a personal complaint form wired directly to God, trolls will be sent down from the heavens.

When POTUS Trump does what you call trolling, it is probably more like a riposte, a return of the jab. One of the tactics from his book was to fight back hard when being treated unfairly or badly, not curl up in a ball and bawl.

I think it became fashionable when the intel agencies militarized it through social media and in the media news with placed intel propaganda agents with Operation Mockingbird. Trump is just responding to these intel paid trolls, and doing an effective end-run around the censoring media news sources.

Trolling means something completely different now than when the Internet was first coming up. Trolling originally meant baiting somebody -- usually a super nerd -- with deliberately false information just to see if they would respond in that nerdy, pedantic way they would do in order to illustrate their ridiculous level of anality. The classic troll was to mention "James Thomas Kirk" somewhere in a conversation to see if somebody would jump in with "Tiberius!" The point would be that this person got all riled up over something ridiculously trivial, which is funny.

Nowadays you young whippersnappers are all about trolling with hot buttons about current events or some other wider social concern like gun control or abortion just to provoke an angry response. In my book, that's child's play. It has no finesse.
