No it is when society/ the people own the means of production. Totalitarianism is when the government runs the show

You are quite entitled to own the means of production, you just have to create it.

Or buy it. No one can bitch if we pool our money and purchase our own mines and farms.

Seeing as how Capitalism is destroying the world, is massively corrupt, and is bankrupting and torturing millions of people to make a few evil, spoiled, undeserving people richer than God, of course people are waking up and realizing that only socialism would be No Different .

The opportunities for corruption are many orders of magnitude higher in a socialist system.
Socialism requires under paid bureaucrats to enforce the artificial construct.
This inevitably leads to `a nod and a wink` in the full spectrum of the state.
Human beings are not capable, either intellectually or morally to administer centralized socialist control.
An advanced AI may be capable, but I wouldn't risk it.

Pro tip for ya bub, no one has really lived in a socialist country these countries may have had a few socialist programs, but remember if the government fully controls any business/ industry that is not socialism. It could be a whole host of various -isms, depending on certain variables but true socialism is not one of them.

There is no such thing as a 100% free market other than third world bazaars. However, markets can be largely unencumbered allowing free flow of goods and competition.

Or in anarchist societies. And what you say about markets being largely unencumbered is also true, but it is not a free market and once that is recognized and put in perspective, the idea the member I was responding to seem a bit naive.

Despite what liberals think, most individuals are rational and can make their own decisions.

Pure hyperbolic nonsense. You are just making up partisan bs.

The biggest issue is that regulation often tends slow creep where it starts stifling innovation and markets

It also stops people from being taken advantage of. We have to have a good mix of regulation and commercial freedom.

In addition, socialist type policies can also have other unintended consequences when it comes to consumer / public behavior that can be worse than the ill government was originally trying to prevent.

A good example of this is how single motherhood exploded with the advent of welfare and policies keeping men out of the home. The intention was good, but the actual results devastating. Policy planners incorrectly looked at the incentives.

Single motherhood, or kids born out of wedlock, has been on the rise for decades. It has very little to do with welfare and has to do with societal changes.

Liberals don't trust people to make their own decisions. This is evident in the policies that are put forth. Liberals take a "government knows better than you" approach to damn near everything...

Regulations don't stop people from being taken advantage of. Fraudsters and crooks are always one step ahead. Bureaucracy focuses on compliance with regulations, not common sense and effectiveness.

We have a decent mix of regulation and free market, but as I stated, there is a slow creep where regulations start to stifle innovation and raises costs for consumer with questionable efficacy.

The single motherhood situation is well documented within the black community. It was barely 25% in 1965 and is now around 75%. Welfare created a culture in which men were replaced by Uncle Sam.

Wrong again. There is no socialist country (real socialist, not dictatorships like Cuba) thati is as corrupt or destructive as the United States is now. Socialism is a society based on providing for human needs, which means there's no real incentive to be evil and make tons of money. That is in capitalism, and dicatatorships, in which the only measure of life is money, so of course it will cause massive corruption.

How could anyone be so ignorant to believe that people who are raised to worship money would not be more corrupt than people who just want to live their lives and be themselves???

Very few people are asking for free houses or anything like that and socialism does not demand anything of the sort. All we want is a stronger chance to earn a better life

I'm not sure what 'real socialism is'.Utopian thinkers have tried to implement their hubris quite a few times.
socialism implemented in reality seems always tend toward : a firstly incompetent, then corrupt, and then tyrannical state.

When the words 'democracy' and 'socialism' appear together, be prepared to be averaged.

The Democrat Party has had up to 70 members at a time of Democratic Socialists of America, yes Bernie Sanders and Maxine Watters to name just two.
They have been lurching leftward deeper into socialism. It's not an accident. Fabian Socialism is an incremental approach to changing from Capitalism to Communism. It has been happening over decades, slowly while the frogs hang in the pot as they keep turning up the heat.....

As suspected all along.....

According to a new Gallop Poll, Democrats seem to favor Socialism over Capitalism 😃

Of course many Democrat candidates running for office will say different and have voters believe they are "Moderates" and are in favor of the "People" and not big government.

But almost all Democrat policies (especially the high impact policies and legislation) always make government bureaucrats run your lives and your money.

Don't fall for their BS 😎

Expose the phonies and liars that will take you down 🔑🔓

Zi Democrati --- Zi Parti of Zi People !! 😃

HARD LEFT: New Poll Shows Most DEMOCRATS Prefer ‘SOCIALISM’ to ‘Capitalism’

A stunning new poll released by Gallup shows a majority of Democrats now prefer “socialism” to “capitalism,” signaling the shocking new direction of the party just months before American voters head to the polls.

The survey finds that “for the first time in Gallup’s measurement over the past decade, Democrats have a more positive image of socialism than they do of capitalism.”

Democrats who spout this nonsense are ignorant about Socialism...

Unlike you I've actually been to socialist countries, so I have a real understanding instead of the propagandist, cartoonish mindviews that most of you have. America was closer to socialism in the past, and it was better overall. Now as we become more and more capitalist, our country is getting worse and worse. Anyone with a brain and an ounce of objectivity can see that, as well the end result which is oligarchy, then aristocracy, which is definitely tyrannical.

This “anyone with a brain” talk destroys your cred. I have an iq of 131, 3 degrees, and make 6 figures. I think our system works. Then again I believe in self reliance and personal responsibility

When was the USA closer to socialism?
What policies were in place?

I do believe you are mistaken.
But please, educate me. Provide links

There are various forms of socialism. The bad one most people think about is leninism or stalinism. Where the government controlled every single aspect of every day life right down to the clothes everyone would wear.

The ideal form of socialism is one that is built upon a strong capitalist economy(much like the one we have). Where every worker has the right to vote on every company policy, including fair wages and eh.ehm... company location.
This is what is meant when the abolishment of private property is brought up. Everyone still has personal property and it still has to be earned for the most part, but businesses have to be publicly shared whether it be through employee owned stocks or unions and full voting rights.

Local government would ultimately serve the same purpose as it does now concerning the well being of its citizens. Fire fighters, police, roads, water, sewage, etc... A few changes I would like to see to the current system are mandatory voting in all elections, those elected will create laws and regulations that the people then vote on.

Apply the same ideas to the federal government add universal healthcare and education and we will have a healthy and well educated workforce Which will in turn provide a healthy economy and the tax revenue needed to pay for said programs.
