Tao Te Ching - Written by Lao-Tzu
A Translation

by j.h.mcdonald
1996
Only PART of chapter 15 & 16.

15
The Sages of old were profound
and knew the ways of subtlety and discernment.
Their wisdom is beyond our comprehension.
Because their knowledge was so far superior
I can only give a poor description.

They were careful
as someone crossing a frozen stream in winter.
Alert as if surrounded on all sides by the enemy.
Courteous as a guest.
Fluid as melting ice.
Whole as an uncarved block of wood.
Receptive as a valley.
Turbid as muddied water.

16

All creatures in the universe
return to the point where they began.
Returning to the source is tranquility
because we submit to Heavens mandate.

Returning to Heavens mandate is called being constant.
Knowing the constant is called 'enlightenment'.
Not knowing the constant is the source of evil deeds
because we have no roots.
By knowing the constant we can accept things as they are.
By accepting things as they are, we become impartial.
By being impartial, we become one with Heaven.
By being one with Heaven, we become one with Tao.
Being one with Tao, we are no longer concerned about
loosing our life because we know the Tao is constant
and we are one with Tao.

I am quoting this part of the Tao Te Ching because it makes me feel happy for some reason.

If you want more erudite commentary please provide ( i'm not against it. )

Thanks greatly for the wise words of Lao Tzu one of my favorite sages I seek guidance from.

I will just comment on the word constant he says is enlightenment.

Interesting word. One meaning of it is something invariable or unchanging:

Wow

The farther you go, the less you know.
Thus the sage knows without travelling;
He sees without looking;
He works without doing.

The word 'Tao' means 'the way it is'.

This that Is is the way it is.

What IS is.

One interesting thing Lao Tzu said is that men should be more like women.

Coming from this sage, I think I understand that.

I would love to see a link to see the context in which it was said................if possible?
Thank you.

What else makes you feel a certain way?
Why must there be a reason?

What if you are just happy, and for no reason?

What if you posted the quote for joy, and the simple thought that it might possibly bring joy to another soul?

Oh! BTW: thanks!!

You guys around here are always trying to make me think.

Or maybe its to get me to not think so much.

And don't thank me, thank yourself! Due to cause and effect that's essentially what you're doing.
The more thanks you have given to people, the more you will receive (later). Believe me. I should know!

There you are.

That was most poetic.

Just an illustration of how today's generation regards form as more important than substance.

Ahhh!
So if no such thing as cause-and-effect, then there is merely thankfulness?

Old habits and societal niceties, perhaps we hold-on to those somehow, no?

The light is gratitude and gratitude is light. Until then, cause and effect.

In my experience, gratitude literally makes you one with the light. The light is gratitude. I don't know why.

I think God feels gratitude for creation and creation feels gratitude for God.
