nanny state preservative stuff.

I hear the same about cheese, that Euro stuff is way superior cuz in the USA has to be hyperpasturized. for our own safety of course.

It's not just bread. Cakes from grocery stores in the U.S. taste weird, too. They always look ten times better than they taste. Typically, a box mix cake and canned frosting you make yourself for a few dollars tastes better than the nice looking $20 cake from the store bakery. Same with cookies and pies sometimes.

You can purchase cheese made locally that us unpasteurized.

As I was scanning the list of recent threads, my eyes read "breads" as "beards" and the ensuing several moments went from grossed out, to relief, to laughing. MMMMM, tasty European beards!
