It would cost millions of dollars to business owners, corporations, and numerous other entities to make any kind of
change to the city's name. If I had any interest there I would sue to stop any name change; I guess it would turn into a class action suit with numerous people joining in.

It's all about fee-fee's.

Your money is not a consideration.

The fact that some may have to fire people to pay for it is not a consideration.

It's about feelings.

Of course you don’t care. I just killed your argument. It’s okay to glorify a man who realized that slavery was evil.

I don’t know why you are talking about cash. What does that have to do with anything? Accusing people of burning books, asking for cash- you’re not making much sense.

You want to burn books, deny history, erase history,

George Washington is on cash.

He was a slave owner. You can't possibly own that cash.

So I will take it for you.

This has already been done. We aren't talking about a new town being founded or new monuments being proposed.

You are talking about erasing the so-called sins of the fathers by renaming things to show how virtuous you are in an empty gesture. None of it actually changes anything that happened. It doesn't even change the fact that the city was named Austin.

Our ancestors already judged these people worthy to have towns named for them and statues erected.
Don't like it? Start your own country and name towns whatever you like.
You might have to win a war first like these guys did.

Austin? Austin, Texas? That magical little s**thole? Let them rename it. They don’t deserve to bear the name of the #1 president of the ROT. They want to talk about how he opposed a slavery ban, but conveniently ignore how he fixed Mirabeau B Lamar’s attempt to drive all of the natives out of Texas (see Comanche County). But yeah let them rename it. I’ll even give you a few you can change it to:

-Pretentious, Texas
-Traffic Jam, Texas
-Portland, Texas
-San Francisco, Texas
-C**t City, Texas
-Homelessness, Texas
-The City Formerly Known as Austin, Texas (just a symbol)
-New Leningrad, Texas (because slavery is worse than genocide)

Oh I see, if we rename it, it'll be like we had a time machine, oh ok, everything's okay now, racism will no longer exist, aids is now cured because it never happened.

What a bunch of #ing Nazis

Well the problem there is that cash is super valuable. Seems to me that it's wiser to keep the cash and feel a bit guilty, than go to the poor house guilt free. Although I don't think kayla feels guilty for it anyway.

Is renaming the same as book burning? It's not like they want to burn Austin, they just want to rename it. And there's only one Austin, so they can't just make a new copy and save the old ones.

a reply to: ketsuko

I don't see it as virtue-signalling. Maybe they are motivated by that, but that doesn't mean it's not right to change the name. If you're worried about their sins being erased, then we could set up a kickstarter for some sort of Stephen F. Austin slave-owning museum in the city, haha. That would be way more effective at reminding us, than just the city name. Or even just a monument would work too.

I don't know if it's a good idea to actually change the name, though. The new name might be worse than the old one. For me personally, having a cool-sounding name is more important than not having a slavery-related name.

I think Istanbul should be renamed to Constantinople!

Lol, I see how you picked examples of renaming towns due to takeover by a horribly oppressive communist regime.

But if that's what's going on in Austin, I guess it's best we get it out in the open. Do you likewise support it when the Taliban destroys things like the giant Buddha statues or ISIS destroys ancient archaeological sites? Those are examples of the same type of phenomena.

You are aware that someone has discovered disaparaging remarks that Einstein made about Asians in his private diary recently? Right? Clearly Einstein was racist, and this person feels that erases all the good things Einstein has ever done, and we ought not honor Einstein for anything because of these remarks.

This is the problem.

People are so busy purging people based on the perceived wrongs of the past. They are judging the past through the present lens of present mores. They aren't considering that the past was a different time with different mores. People who lived in those days ought to be judged through the lens of those times.

Who knows who and what Stephen F. Austin would have been like had be been born and raised in the environment of today. For all anyone knows, he might have been a tower of the leftist order, but he wasn't born and raised today by today's mores. He was born and raised in the past. All of this pearl clutching of today is really a reaction to our discomfort over the realities of the past and upset over what happened then and what those days were like.

In short, we are hating on our own history because it's not politically correct. We are hating on the idea that the great people of the past did things that are unacceptable by today's standards, but today was not then. And times and beliefs then were different. Too many today don't make any effort to understand that, and they don't make any effort to understand that if they lived them, they'd be completely different people themselves.

The other problem, going back to Einstein, is that it's very easy to look at people who actually did things, real difficult things in their lives and pick out the dark spots and tear them down for it. That requires no real effort or achievement on your part, but it does make you feel superior to them without you having to actually achieve anything of actual value. You can tear down an Einstein if you can spot the hidden racist. No actual theoretical physics needed, and suddenly, you're better then one of the best theoretical physicists ever! It's an easy way to look big and important without producing anything yourself that's of any real value to anyone.

Yeah, George Washington fought a war and founded a new country ... but he once owned slaves and was a racist. I never did that, so I'm better than him even as I live in my parents' basement and don't do anything. *puffs out chest and feels superior to someone who did actual tough stuff in life*

It took me a while, but I finally came up with a perfect new name for Austin. Vagina. Vagina Texas giving birth to a new Texas where no one EVER NEVER EVER gets their feelings hurt and its ok for men transitioning into zers to cry.

Hopefully a slew of Highschools will follow suit and change their namesake and mascot to vagina as well.
