No, it means that any earnings through leases or profit on his buildings or hotels, if the money comes from other governments, for example, is seen as profit, even if it is at base value. Any earnings are considered gifts. So, I haven't read about this enough to know how this applies to guests staying in hotels or if it's just the Bank of China that leases floors in his buildings, or Germany and so on. It could be just countries or could be down to individuals. I can update you once I find out.

The way to avoid this situation would have been to divest all his interests and ownership into a blind trust, as an example.

Under this pretext, any book bought by a foreign official that was written by a sitting President would also fall under this definition.

The facts that make this case a hit job by the judge is that Trump divested himself from his company. Any payment for services rendered wouldn't go to him, instead it would go to the Trump Company. Kind of funny how this just happen to get ruled on when an attempt to remove Rosenstein from the FBI, isn't it?

I agree. I would bet everything I have that a Trump hotel is better than a Motel 6.

I'm not talking about Motel 6 per-say, it was a derogatory reference to other hotels in D.C. area and no I don't have personal experience other than if dims are complaining it's evidence enough.

Why do foreign officials have to stay at other hotels other than the whole progressive it's not fair thing.

And based on how much trouble it was to get through traffic last time I was in the area 40 years ago interviewing, I can't imagine it has gotten any better. So for no other reason than proximity to White House is reason enough to stay there.

Sounds like another victory for the political class and the two major parties.

Is this different?

Another nothing burger brought on by a judge wanting some media spotlighting.

You jump for joy over several nothingburger threads, pretty sad 😐

*sigh*

Does it matter?

Obama violated the emolument clause and no one batted an eye.

yalejreg.com...

But Trump is evil and must be stopped.

Blah, blah, blah.

There is no equal treatment under the law. It is all partisan.

Might as well call it what it is.

A coup d'état.

Go storm the castle OP!

Grrrrr. . . . . . !

We're being charged for him staying at his own properties to golf (which he's done 53 times -- that's about a year's worth of weekends) and eating at his own restaurants, etc, etc... money that goes back to him. And for sending his sons to stay at his properties in Abu Dhabi, etc, while they were on business for Trump enterprises.

...among other things.

You probably haven't noticed, but it's irritated the heck out of me.

For someone who claims to dislike both sides, you sure do focus ALOT of attention on Trump.

And? Who is in charge of every part of the government and is making the news for corruption pretty much daily?

Apparently you haven't been meeting your Hillary Clinton quota for the week but I get it, every time you wanna post a thread about her someone always out foxes you and beats you to it!

I think you should perhaps re-read the article. The professor is making a case that the terms of one lawsuit are not being properly set up because under those terms Obama could be sued for owning US Treasury bonds.

It doesn't say he violated the clause.

First, so-called America will never be a socialist-state, ever, this hyperbolic "Red-Scare" is just rightist propaganda. the Democrats and Republicans are both capitalist scum, the closest thing to a viable "party" is the DemSocs and they are not even Socialists, they are Capitalist light

Irritated? Good, perks of the position, get on with it 😏

Hard work should be rewarding and he deserves it.

Never understood this perspective.

I think the comparison stands. If we're going to go to such great lengths concerning Trump.

Why can't people just admit a bias exists?

This is idiotic and completely daft. He's taking gifts by foreigners staying in his hotels at normal rates that's asinine on its face that does not violate the emoluments clause. That Clause is based on a president or a politician accepting gifts from foreign Nationals respective of giving their countries preferential treatment. This is just mean I don't have the words to describe how asinine the idea of him owning hotels and foreigners staying there means that he's receiving gifts.

Doesn't sound like an emolument if it's the US footing the bill.

What does any of this matter? Didn't he transfer all of his businesses to his sons? So some civil lawsuit is gonna somehow take him down for what? Having successful children?

I really don't understand the craziness of the impeach Trump crowd. You know that would just give is Pence, right?

No, no, no. You don't understand leftist delusion. They think that somehow Pence will also go down. Then the Speaker of the House will also do the "honorable" thing and step aside or somehow seat Pelosi because it will be magically clear that Democrats should have won all along, and Pelosi, in her turn, will graciously then coronate Hillary who clearly should have won all along.

I think I have the basic gist of how this one goes, but if you go searching, you can find Op-Eds on it in supposedly serious publications.
