Judging from the responses in this thread, I'd say that poll was wildly off the mark.

In answer to the question, the answer is a resounding no.

But it is not because of who is President but for this reason.

This country, this republic was founded on a paper skiff, with words that conveyed certain ideas. Even the first sitting US President, Washington, did not want to be in that position for life, even though the people would have accepted it. His reasoning is that they had just got rid of a King, and should not be so eager to put or make another to rule over the people.

But more fundamentally and practically, do you want to set a dangerous precedent that you may not like the outcome in the future? Would you have accepted this very idea, under say Obama, or Bush II, or even Nixon? The problem here is that the government works on precedents, good and bad, and more often than not, they exploit the bad ones time and time again. One side will do an action, and when the other side gets into that position, will do it as well, exploiting it and the side that started it, will cry foul. Further, would we be so willing to give up our voice in choice of a president, as small as a voice it is? Would you be so willing to accept the changing of a republic, to that of an autocrat or a dictatorship?

Make no mistake, that once this door is opened up, the precedent is used, then it will never be closed and fully exploited. It is right now the excuse is to ensure the validity of the election, that no illegal immigrant will be voting, then it will lead to another excuse and so on. And with that opening of a door, this paper skiff, this experiment in self determination and rule will end up sinking in the seas of and swallowed up by tyranny, of a government that believes itself to be separate and superior to the population, with no means for the public, the very people to have a say in it.

If you have an out come the majority doesn’t agree with in a democracy people get pissed.

Fortunately we don't have, and never have had a democracy, but instead live in a democratic republic. Jeez, Cox. We buy you books and buy you books and all you do is eat the pages...

It is ridiculous. The 2020 elections, why would any of us support postponing them? 2024 may be a different story, though.

Fair enough.

I don’t see 52% either... but quite a few ATSers did say yes they would be ok with it..

Was it 52% probably not..

Did every hard core conservative ATSer say no??

Nope...

So what’s fair??

20-25% of conservative ATSers would say yes to trump staying past his second term??

I’m not so sure that Is brag worthy lol..

The number should be zero by your own analysis.

Lincoln didn’t even post pone the election in the civil war..

So you would or would not support trump if he postponed the election because he said it was to install a ID system??

That is the question..

Not if you want an ID system without postponing the election.

“Would prefer” doesn’t mean “would support him if he postponed it”..

So what is the ATS opinion???

Would you buy it??

Or would you freak the hell out??

lol, man, they've got to come up with a btw routine. I've been hearing about suspended elections at least since Bush Jr.

Bush didn't do it, Obama didn't do it, and Trump won't do it.

We have a process for electing people in this country and nowhere does it say that foreign nationals should participate in our elections. Anyone can have an opinion, have a preferred candidate, and post whatever crap they want on fb. But that is very different than actually casting a vote. If there was evidence suggesting that enough illegals were going to vote to sway the outcome, yes, I would be in favor of delaying the election but only as long as it took to establish and implement more stringent voter identification.

I don't think anyone can deny that illegals voted in 2016 any more. Its not if, its how many. It is also no secret that dem strongholds have more illegals due to sanctuary declaration and so on. Some of those states have quite a few electoral votes and that is what matters. Per our Constitution, there is no requirement for a popular vote for POTUS. There never was. Its a nice comparison of the electoral vote compared to the people they are meant to represent, but it is not a necessary part of the election process. However, which ever side wins the popular vote always tries to claim victory in the election. Fortunately, its not often that the two differ.

The real concern is faithless electors. Though some states have laws that compel electors to vote for the chosen candidate, others do not and electors can go rogue and cast an electoral vote however they choose to. In the current political climate I can see that happening more and more frequently unless something is done about it.

With no requirement for a popular vote and electors who can disregard the majority at will, the idea of the votes of the common man actually making a difference is pretty much over.

I almost feel sorry for trump, he thought he was going to be loved and respected by our ally's instead he is mocked and ridiculed on the world stage.

www.nytimes.com...

Unless he can repair his image...he's done, his ego can't stand the strain!

What ever gave you that idea?

He hurls the truth at them. How many want to hear it?

Did Germany not make a deal with Putin for Oil?

Did Iran act like they can whip our ass with the Mother of All Wars comment like Saddam Hussein?

Did the FBI just get caught paying agents of European Gov while ignoring glaring Security rules to even law breaking by HRC, red handed?

YES YES YES, all true.

What other ego can handle everyone hating them when told the hard truth, is a better question?

I still plan on voting a Paul for Pres but I see the BS is greatly against the much needed swamp draining. For all his personality faults, this POTUS can take it from anybody Bronx style having had many years practice is what we have here. 45 is a real butt kicker and some old guard inside the beltway butts need kicking out of the swamp.

ETA
Did illegal voters cast votes in California? HELL YES!
Did Dead people vote this time? HELL YES!
Vet them with ID's and stop the madness.

Remember when they stopped r- counting the ballots in the Michigan POTUS districts because they didn't match?

They had to void the recount credibility. NO ballots were recounted.

The law should be, if you can't prove it is untampered through the chain of custody like when Sen. Al Franken brought more than one ballot box personally to be recounted, should be inadmissible. It is the DUTY of the Registrar of the precinct to verify the authenticity of the vote count.

You know what I find funny? When you guys hear "deep state" you laugh and roll your eyes and call those people crazy lol.

Like its to hard to believe .

But you believe the Russians by using FB memes were able to cheat Hillary out of the election. Whic Hillary, Obama, Biden and all the other lefties said was impossible to do..

So you believe the evil Russians did the impossible using Facebook for Christs sake but the deep state is crazy talk.

If there is no deep state, where did all the claims of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq come from? Now the Dems are buddies with the intelligence community, and blindly trusts the intelligence community? Oh, it’s different when you can weaponize the intelligence community for an election after stacking it for eight years with appointments?

52% or Republicans would carve their own mothers heart out if that's what the party told them.

No surprise here, as long as our political party does it, it's okay.

And it only takes one Democrat like Maxine Waters calling for harassment, which is illegal, to send out the Useful Idiots?

You are referring to a poll like the ones that predicted Hillary would win?

Are you referring to a poll who’s operators are obviously biased, and design to create discord?

Still, it's important to note that no Republican politician, including the president, has actually suggested this.
www.usatoday.com...

A poll with a narrow sample?

The survey, conducted by two academics and published in the Washington Post on Thursday, interviewed a sample of 1,325 Americans from June 5-20 and focused on the 650 people who said they were or leaned toward the GOP.

www.usatoday.com...

More on who was sampled from the Washington Post? Its only people claiming to be republicans. I am sure there are no bots?

www.washingtonpost.com... -trump-proposed-it/?utm_term=.25d08d810fdb

The survey interviewed a sample of 1,325 Americans from June 5 through 20. Respondents were recruited from the Qualtrics online panel who had previously reported identifying with or leaning toward one of the two major parties. We focus on the 650 respondents who identify with or lean toward the Republican Party. The sample has been weighted to match the population in terms of sex, age, race and education.

These are how the questions were phrased?

www.washingtonpost.com... -trump-proposed-it/?utm_term=.25d08d810fdb

Then the survey asked two questions about postponing the 2020 election.

If Donald Trump were to say that the 2020 presidential election should be postponed until the country can make sure that only eligible American citizens can vote, would you support or oppose postponing the election?
What if both Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress were to say that the 2020 presidential election should be postponed until the country can make sure that only eligible American citizens can vote? Would you support or oppose postponing the election?
