North.

How would dead reckoning work? You have to know where the object is first (in order to navigate to it).

Remember an old episode of an old TV show "Chips" where they had an accident due to a reflection hitting the highway, turned out to be a glass delivery truck to a construction site.

I could be way out in idiotsville here but my possible solution.

You have the surveyor skills and equipt. Pretty sure it is possible to get pretty accurate heights of mountains and what not using some form of fancy math and survey equipt. Would it be possible to get a range of elevations across the horizon and various distances from your known point. Get a topographic map and try to match your elevations and then it might be narrowed down enough to use a google earth type map.

Or how far can your drone fly?

Is that what you are requesting?

Yup.

Maybe you could vary your time of departure each morning. Maybe 10 minutes earlier or later each morning.

When you encounter your window of opportunity to view the reflection, you shoot an azimuth and record your location. After a while, you'll have several measurements separated by a couple dozen miles or so.

You can reduce the error introduced by the oblique angles by using multiple measurements. Instead of using triangulation, you're using poly-angulation.
