As a member asked me the other day..

"Are you still beating your wife?"

That's to the left or the right, whichever.

This is the type of person who is completely
obtuse to any realization they can make others
embarrassed to be human.

A grown adult having a childish little
tantrum. Pathetic.

I read that and thought it was a pathetic response. I didn't comment because I don't get involved in two adults having an argument about something which has nothing to do with me.
People get abusive online, the OP should just click alert to the mods if he sees stuff which he doesn't like.
I equate it to me seeing a heated argument in a nightclub and quietly telling security that they may want to nip it in the bud before it turns into a fist fight.
Whining about people arguing is pretty lame in my opinion though.

Exactly the kind of rubbish I am talking about.

Its just not right on so many levels to say that to another member.

Holy crap, is there some sanity returning to the left? We don't agree on almost anything, otherside, but we agree here. Calling the otherside extreme names (nazi, fascist, communist, socialist, retarded, deranged, stupid, etc) only lowers the quality of the debate. Now, I'm not going to say it should never happen (afterall, we are all human and we are passionate about these subjects) but the frequency with which it occurs is out of hand.

I'm in the North East - we don't do long spells of sunshine.

Piss taking of both ourselves and others is our favourite past time - self-deprecation has evolved into an art form here.
Neither do we suffer fools and idiots are sussed out immediately and treat accordingly.
Obviously political stereotypes of any description are prime targets....no place for Generation Snowflake and the PC Brigade.

And your observation is highly indicative of
of just who is carrying on this unpatriotic,
unamerican, childish resistance of a duly
elected official. And there be the hopeless
reality of this thread. You can't reason with
spoiled children who only know what they
want. And to sit down at a table with them
Is simply degrading. Who knows when a red
faced little brat is gonna freak.

Better yet, r-selection and K-selection gene war theory better describes and discusses what you are attempting to convey in your OP - we simply need to accept that there are many who feign logic over emotions when it comes to everyday life - not just political or social viewpoints, but in every aspect of their lives, right down to whaTt they eat and why they eat what they eat.

TL;DR - forget it, the human desire to subjugate those who disagree with perceived common causes is built in at the genetic level - you are a lion or you are a rabbit. You legitimately care about others' ethical & moralistic plights, even when they don't align with yours OR you legitimately don't care about others' ethical & moralistic plights when they don't align with yours.

The subject of how people are relating to each other in political conversations has been a common one in my house lately.

I had (emphasis on had, recently) a friend whom I have known for around 40 years. We never really had any huge blowout kind of arguments. Until obama got elected. An offhand remark about healthcare mandates being unfair and unconstitutional was enough to start the cheese sliding off his cracker. But still, his cracker was fairly well cheesed. Then Trump won. Not only did that whack the cheese off his cracker like a curdled golf ball off a saltine tee, but it totally destroyed him, cracker and all. There was nothing left to do but bury the elves that baked his sad crumbled little cracker world and be done with it.

I always knew that he and I would never be able to talk politics. That is why it surprised me to see him attacking me on social media. I gave a sound trouncing a few times in some heated debates, something admittedly he is not well suited for and considerably out gunned. (I felt no honor gained in beating him soundly) But what came next is what truly amazed me. The absolute pure venomous hatred that spewed from him was stunning. A fissure of Hells own hate formed in his throat and issued forth bile and acidic contempt for all things conservative. He was truly rabid. His posts were so disjointed and fractured with rage, his thoughts so rapid and incomplete, I truly feared for his well being. Of course by this time he was not longer on any kind of topic and it was all nothing but personal attacks. You can say almost anything but you can't publicly accuse people of crimes they did not commit. (I have an attorney handling that)

Upon witnessing this erosion of thought into unbridled anger, myself and several others decided it was time to step away from the political table and entertain subjects less likely to trigger a psychotic event. My detractor is still out there arguing for all he is worth...sadly, alone.

Take a step back. Breath air that is fresh and clean instead of the exhaust of another politically offended engine churning out reasons to hate. When you eventually look back you will wonder, as I did, how you ever allowed yourself to be drawn in to that mess in the first place. Then BANG! One word hits your wrong and your off....but wiser this time.

Another great OP

I really think it’s about time we all take a step back; take a deep breath and actually reflect on the way we converse with each other when it comes to political debate.

OSOTC, you are completely on point here

We as members I think all need to raise the bar in how we converse with each other and I for one don’t care who said what to you first or how abhorrent you might find funny looking alien in a suit’s views on whatever issue it might be.

Subtle and charming wit, the way political debates or coy jabs should be. Not a knock-down fight that more accurately reflects some sort of "total war" strategy vs a simple political disagreement!

Now, I am sure that most people who are reading this thread have seen some pretty nasty language used on these boards, hell I am sure that most of us, myself included have been guilty of not showing the proper respect to fellow members.

No doubt about it, I am guilty of the same as well. I hope other ATSers know it is only a reaction/expression of outrage or frustration rather than a concerted personal attack or dislike of any particular ATSers. I am especially guilty of that myself

I am sure you will get mixed reactions here, but thanks for posting this. I am with you on that buddy

So…..

I think this thread could be interesting, but I know that the title alone might have a few of you already tapping away on your keyboard ready to flame me for the provocative title alone. I implore you however to stick with it since it is exactly these kinds of derogatory and provocative terms I want to talk about because they are probably annoying me as much as you.

Now, I am sure that most people who are reading this thread have seen some pretty nasty language used on these boards, hell I am sure that most of us, myself included have been guilty of not showing the proper respect to fellow members. I am writing this thread because I really think it’s about time we all take a step back; take a deep breath and actually reflect on the way we converse with each other when it comes to political debate.

Regardless of whether it is the “loony” left or the “racist” right, if it’s the Nazi or the libtard with the Never-Trumper vs the Trumptard who all seem to have contracted some horrible debilitating condition known as Trump Derangement Syndrome in which they get triggered by every bit of political bait that is cast out there I think we need to talk about this. This is what political debate has turned into, particularly in this forum, the mud-pit. It’s almost now an ever-ending quest to out-insult the party opposite pushing the T@C’s to there absolute limits with really just a smattering of actual political debate and discussion sprinkled in for good measure.

When we really think about some of the crap we are saying to each other its getting really quite silly. Take for example the use of the phrase “looney left”, think about what you are actually saying when you use that phase because what you are truly saying is that you believe that people who disagree with you politically must be “looney” or in some way mentally deranged. The level of arrogance that implies is simply outstanding. We on the left are also not immune to falling into this trap, calling someone you don’t know a racist/Nazi/ xenophobe or whatever because they have expressed a view on an issue like immigration that does not fit your views is in my view at least a little bit looney. I don’t know you, you don’t know me other than reading a few posts, so how can anyone can possibly say with any degree of certainty if you are a Nazi sympathiser?

The same goes for this utterly stupid (yes its stupid) phrase of just saying “Trump Derangement Syndrome” with anything you disagree with. TDS goes both ways and I have personally seen both Trump supporters and their opposites use this phrase within equally pointless arguments. It’s almost as if when you run out of argument’s you just run to the TDS line because, hey, it might generate a few stars and distract form whatever was being debated 20 pages ago.

We as members I think all need to raise the bar in how we converse with each other and I for one don’t care who said what to you first or how abhorrent you might find funny looking alien in a suit’s views on whatever issue it might be. It’s all petty crap, I genuinely don’t think any members of ATS open up a thread with the intention of getting into a nasty debate full of pointless one-liner insult’s or pretending that your opinion somehow is of more value than that of another members and therefore deserves to be ridiculed accordingly. It is always possible to respectfully disagree without getting into the silly school yard comments and to be perfectly honest in my view if you can’t disagree with someone without resorting to disrespectful language then you probably shouldn’t be posting it.
lol, the loony left are in fact the racist ones. Their world view is "Poor blacks can't hack it like everyone else without our help." Seriously, how inferior do you have to think a race is to assume they can't make it in today's America without the help of the rich white folks?

Nevermind black folks like one I encountered the other day. She was very close to graduating with her master's degree, debt free, coming out of the hood. No welfare, no sense of entitlement. Just plain determination and work ethic. She didn't need extra help. She isn't dio inferior. She is a conservative. Go figure.

Regardless, we don't have to bludgeon one another over the head with insults. OSOTC is right about that. We're all entitled to our own beliefs, but he makes some great points

It is true that we ought maintain a certain level of civility. It is also true that we ought call a spade a spade. Much of the insult tradition is nothing short of grandstanding, and it doesn't serve honesty, decency or good reason. Both sides are guilty. However, the left has become loony, and they rather than the right are the true racists. The right may suffer from xenophobia and other forms of bigotry, but it is the left who imagine that the whites are superior in a reverse logic short of way.
