Safety Concerns Lead to Emergency Closure Near Jenny Lake In Grand Teton National Park

Still keeping an eye on Yellowstone folks. Looks like a a seismograph went off line there too, according to sources.

A highly popular area near Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming has been closed to the public for the immediate future due to concerns over expanding cracks and fissures in a large rock formation, park officials said Tuesday evening. The National Park Service implemented an emergency closure in the Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point areas on the west side of Jenny Lake for human safety. Some recently expanding cracks and fissures have been identified in a large rock buttress above the Hidden Falls viewing area, a park release said.

Rangers at the park weigh in to the situation.

"Human safety is our No. 1 priority, and with an abundance of caution we are temporarily closing this area until we can properly assess the situation," said Superintendent David Vela. Those familiar with the site, specifically park rangers and personnel with Exum Mountain Guides, identified the cracks and fissures and determined the situation to be a possible safety hazard.

Anyone from ATS in the area be safe.

A cliff face is flaking off. That's what cliff faces do.

Grand Teton National Park rangers shut down Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point on Tuesday for fear that a fissuring rock wall could tumble down onto onlookers.

I am sure your stockpile of guns will protect you. Maybe you can shot the volcano or something.

Self defense will be important in any natural disaster.
Resources become scarce, then people go nuts.

Geo-morphology. land moves. It happens. Super interesting to behold, and dramatic indeed. But should we panic?
Maybe.
Is Yellowstone going to blow?
Possibly.
When?
Some day, maybe. I say maybe because:
1. I am not a professional expert in geology, Geo-morphology, or specifically fluvial Geo-morphology. The fluvial part indicates moving, (or areas that used to be) moving water. That fissure could be due to underground water movement, which is what I suspect but I don't know for sure.. There are certainly many, many things to consider like the mineral content of the area and how those minerals react to whatever chemical processes may be occurring under or within the crust there, Only been to Yellowstone one time, but I do remember a river runs through it. etc. Rocks can get complicated.
And
2. Plate tectonic theory is still a relatively *young* and developing science, having really only developed in the last hundred years or so, specifically in the understanding of oceanic plate movement from readings taken post WW2 using newer radar tech. lots of blank spots to fill in. (How exactly does magma move within the core? outer core? mantle? How exactly does the core movement interact with specific locations? etc, etc, ..etc.. )
Conclusion:
We all know Yellowstone is still a very geologically active region But... I contend that we don't know enough yet to make any type of call. What if it never goes off again? Thant could be possible too.

Still. super cool thread. here is a crack about 200Km from where I live, the drone flyover is worth a look
Rattlesnake ridge crack

No, whaaaa? Please no.

last night i did a good deed and i mean it was a very good deed. The only reason i did it was because a voice either inside me or from beyond? I heard a call and responded. Basically the person in front of me could not pay the clerk at the register ( they kept fumbling with a bunch of cards (all declined)and i paid their bill along with mine. Now i got the clerk and the friend that was with me kinda laughing at me? I mean wth?

Trust me you can't do right anymore.

Thanks for the info.

I heard a climbing bought it last week there on the east side of the mountain?

www.jhnewsandguide.com...

I don't think it's related, but they said he fell as far as anyone could.

May he rest in peace.
