Look man, I´m Portuguese and I can tell you for shure...people here are a bit diferent from americans wen they go to vote...for exemple:

wille you americans are allways completely devided by moral issues and religious stuff, here in Portugal the newly elected prime minister is not married or a religious pearson...

Of course I´m not saying it´s better tath way, I´m just saying that here tath doesn´t matter, because those are private issues.

About the referendum in Spain...

Every four or five years (I don´t even know!!) we have european elections and in all Europe the turnout numbers are allways almoast the same...people dont really care about european elections or referendum.

The reason Spain voted yes is all about Spain's recent history.

They've only fairly recently come out of the disaster of their isolated fascist dictatorship.

To say this is about Spain's level of subsidy is as blinkered as it is just wrong.

The whole point about this kind of subsidy is to elevate recipient countries to the point where they can be 'net contributors'. As is happening now with Ireland. The countries providing the aid benefit by being able to sell and invest into developing markets and the recipient country benefits by gaining a rising standard of living.
We all benefit by the greater stability this generates.
Like an on-going 'Marshall Plan'.

We all win when it works and we can then spread the benefits further and address the next needy countries......like Poland, Hungry etc etc.
