How I silenced my roommates shameless left-wing promotion at my 4th of July BBQ last year..

Happy 4th of July to all!

Id like to start by saying that I don't align myself with any political party. I will not praise, nor insult any person who does. If you feel a certain party is in line with your beliefs & morals and are happy supporting that party, im happy for you!
BUT..... please dont try push your political leanings on me. Especially at a 4th of July BBQ.

Last year I had a BBQ on the fourth as I do every year. I had the usual handful of friends and family who I know will always attend, plus a 'new guy' to the annual beer & food gorging that we look forward to every year. Not necessarily 'new' considering he had been my roommate for 8 months at that time, but new to our gathering.
IMO, politics and religion need not be discussed at any social gathering, let alone MY social gathering, let alone on the 4th of July, when we should be more United than ever.
A friend of mine was guilty of bringing up politics first. Shes a hard right winger, while my roomy is hard left. They butted heads IMMEDIATELY. Before i could shut them both up, they were in a full on debate. I mentioned that their 'debate' was inappropriate, and unwelcomed. The friend of mine, knowing my policy on religion and politics backed off immediately, dropping her gloves and taking a few final, unanswered 'cheap shots' from my roomy, with my roomy trying to close with, "the whole reason you're even celebrating here today is because liberals revolted and fought for our independence!!! Your independence!!!"
He was on my last nerve, and then it hit me..
I asked my roommate, "didn't the revolting liberals you speak of, win the fight for independence with a whole bunch of guns? Then, didn't they make it a constitutional right that we all may, and should own weapons in case we have to revolt again?"
The bbq went great, and for the net month he tried to give an explanatory rebuttal to no avail. I found it funny because I cant debate politics for crap! Im a, "to each their own" type of guy. I guess The sun does shine on a dogs a$$ every now and then!

Have a safe and happy Fourth everyone!!!

No hard feelings England hey?
(joking)

Yup. I agree. Logic wins the day and logic will immediately shut down an illogical argument derived of emotion and half truths.
And I like your approach to politics. I'm pretty center on most things, a little left here, a little right there. I never discuss politics. It's interesting that hard lefties always want me to know their political views. It's a forced. I work for a company that is actively suing this administration. So I get to hear hard left political talk every day. I keep my mouth shut. I play the game. But every once in a while, I'll have an interesting talk with some of my coworkers that really inspires me. I'll be shoked on occasion.

This thread sounds very noble and patriotic to me as I align with the standards of which patriotism and American culture lives... which is by far the best and easiest country to make a free living life for one self and family. For those of you that disagree, why don't you all try to have these freedoms of voice in ANY other country? These things are EASY in America... not HARD... Americans have it easier than any other nation on the planet. Sure it's a rough and tumble world these days, but the U.S. is still the greatest country on Earth to live life on day to day!

THIS IS THE BEAUTY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA... THAT WE CAN AND ARE ABLE TO SAY WHATEVER THE HELL WE WANT TO EACH OTHER AND FEEL ANY WAY I WISH ABOUT ONE'S POLITICAL BELIEFS... AND STILL LOVE ALL AMERICANS THE SAME. Why does a certain set of parameters have to be met prior to getting access to an annual collection of 'American's that can abide by certain rules of engagement'?

You know what though... I will always strive to treat others as I would want them to treat my own child. Gathering in groups of divide in either subtle or blatant fashion only teaches our children to be fearful, and to pick a side before engaging in debate with other Americans... which only draws the expanding lines in the soil between us deeper and wider. I'd much prefer to teach children to be strong Americans... to be strong and loving by way of attending the parties of which can get as heated as imaginable on the verbal fronts, while still loving and caring for fellow Americans by way of sharing hot dogs and fire works.

We as individuals can only control how we as individuals treat and love each other. I'd prefer to be attended the 4th of July parties where engagement of opinions has no reigns, and that I could leave the party knowing I was still cared for as a fellow American.

Because the host, LAST YEAR & CLEARLY NOT FORGOTTEN, failed to lay out the ground rules of divide we have a current party likely brewing up as I type this of which I hope are signs that read 'DO NOT DISCUSS POLITICS AT MY PARTY / NO EXCEPTIONS'. If the party fails at this measure and hides its parameters of divide in an unlabeled way, then the blame of fallout deserves to be in the seat of the party's host.

I actually agree that an outburst of opinion in the stated case was uncalled for. I don't agree with your response. Instead of telling the person that they're opinions are unwelcome due to the time and place, letting all attendees know the ground rules, you chose to bring up gun debate. Can you maybe see a bit of what I am trying to say here? There has been a makeshift 'club' that you are running each year, of which must conform to an unknown set of standards and rules.

I get it... we live in a hugely connected and small gigantic world. A world where people living next to us have vastly changing views on many many more subjects than our ancestors had to deal with... 1000 times more I bet. To me, this just means it's up to me as an individual to control the environment I create and live in and around to the best degree I can. Change should not be feared to the degree that people fear change these days. Rather than include all of these expanding ways of adapting to being human, we sadly witness the paths of divide prevail in the most subtle of ways.

Call me for the party that allows my never settled chances at free thought and imagination to be explored upon by fellow Americans. I am most thankful to be an American born citizen. I will always question as to why the average American wants to remain still and or go backwards instead of take a step forward of any sorts in life's expanding information channels? If you come back and tell us that your party had a "NO POLITICAL DEBATES" sign at the entrance, I will be quite the proud citizen! If it hasn't started yet, please put the sign up as emotions of these subjects is at all time highs.

Thank you Mr. John Morton for your swing vote... you are long gone, but never forgotten!

BTW, if we "wanted" you (which we don't) we'd just take you....
Love ya, man.

PFFFT, Liberals started the revolution? It was the Republic that was established after the revolution, it didn't flip flop or change. If you look at history the old republic party was actually quite the opposite of socialism. Liberals saying the party flip flopped is like hearing the special kid jump for joy about how he just won the race when he never really raced at all...

Great story BTW and happy 4th of July, may your 4th be free, LOUD, and strong PEW PEW PEW!!!

Yes , Britain in losing won their Independence from the US.
In retrospect .

From a US citizen , on Independence Day nonetheless .

Maybe you should have done just a little research on US politics before posting that.
Just a small amount...
Start with :
What was the Federalist party ?
What was the Democratic - Republican Party ?

Get back to us ....

The Republicans back then were all about small government and power to the people, the government stayed out of the peoples homes, churches, and pockets. Socialists are quite the opposite and wanting to control everything and tax the s*** out of everyone and everything. The revolutionary war started because of a 2% tax increase on a breakfast beverage. The only taxes we were supposed to have were justful taxes for example Taxing tires to help repair roads. Those who didn't drive didn't pay taxes on them and didn't have to pay for something they didn't use, an unjustful tax is the federal income tax, taxing those who work hard to pay for others who dont want to work at all, carbon tax, taxing everything we purchase... so, please tell me how our forefathers were liberal, what was it they did that was considered socialism???

BTW America was born July 4th 1776, Marxism or aka socialism or aka communism was born 75 years later...
Marx’s stages of society:
FEUDALISM > CAPITALISM > SOCIALISM > COMMUNISM and as we all know in history, there is no freedom in the end!
