The American Culture...

As an example there are a group of Cubans living in Florida that to this day believe they are Cubans NOT American, they refuse to speak English unless they have no other choice, their kids can only speak Spanish at home, the only fly the Cuban flag etc.


They have not assimilated to the culture of the country they have lived in for decades.

People used to come here to become americans.

I think the yard stick the FED uses has changed recently. There is no longer just an ethnic label for people, but a race AND an ethnicity. For race you can be hispanic or non-hispanic. You also have an ethnicity which can be white , black, native american etc. That being said, we're comparing apples and oranges on this case. Where do hispanic whites fall in the total buckets?

My stepmother's Chinese, she speaks solely Mandarin at home. So does my honky-ass white dad & younger brother, and half brother. They also speak it among themselves out in public, my dad's a firm believer in constant use making a second+ language skill stick. What difference does that make to you & your life? The only difference it makes to me is that I'm not remotely fluent in Mandarin and have never been able to follow any conversations. I'm significantly less butthurt over this than you appear to be.

And what are you going to do about all the folks showing their German/Dutch/Irish/Swedish/Norwegian/Finnish/Polish/Italian/etc pride with those flag decals on their cars? Slash their tires and call them unAmerican? I see a TON of German, Dutch and Polish flag decals on cars here in MI, I don't think they care what you think about it.

It's wrong if you keep your kids so isolated they cannot operate in the larger culture.

It's one thing if they maintain some of that at home, but it's another if they refuse to allow any of the larger culture to be adopted. Then they are effectively colonizing from within.

Most first generation immigrants won't ever learn more than they have to, but the children can and should learn to integrate fully so they can keep both toes in, one on each side. They can't do that if they aren't allowed to by family stricture.

Expound, if you can. I grew up in Florida, where supposedly the Cubans and others don't "mix in", but I'd never seen any real tangible examples of them not doing that.

I wasnt saying they didnt want any Mexicans in, I meant that they fought behind a wall to stop the bad guys(spanish essentially BTW) get in and take Texas.

PS, not having grown up in Texas, they don't teach Texas history in every state, I learned it when I lived there in my adult life.
