Wouldn’t it be nice for someone to put their money where their mouth is concerning the “fake news” claims???

I have an idea for a fairly telling test/competition that I would like to attempt to do, but need help establishing the rules, opponent and platform (hopefully some where on ATS).

1)Take one left wing and rightwing ATSer and either a panel of judges or maybe just thread to post the results.

2) Take the 2 primary news sources with political leanings.. the big boys to, not hack conspiracy sites... say Fox News and msnbc.

3) pick one week out of the calendar (the same week obviously..

4) then each ATSer scours that news sites THEY DO NOT AGREE WITH for OBJECTIVELY propaganda stories and we tabulate a score at the end.

Stories that are blantantly logical fallacies..

In fact logical fallacies might be the best judge of what is objectively fraudulent propaganda.

5) tabulate and discuss the results in a transparent fashion..

6) maybe repeat every week.. maybe it could become a contest with different competitors every week.

Might even go viral one of these weeks..

So what do y’all think???

Anyone especially mods want to help of can think up the best platform and way to do it??

I think it could be quite telling. Exactly how “fake “ a news site is , is objectively knowable and I think something like this could be a great way to establish that.

If one side or the other rarely wins, or loses I guess depending on how you look at it.. then it is pretty obvious who is pushing more blantantly false propaganda.

Thoughts? T

On the Left, the so called reputable news pushes BS.

On the right, usually commentators.

MSM like CNN, yahoo news, and AOL are totally biased, I don’t watch tv any more and I do my own research. I check out BBC and Reuters on line.

Speaking as someone that's not a part of any political parties I would say from my view it's about the same.

My first reaction to any story I hear on cnn or fox is to not believe it.

9 times out of 10 I will find that there was some kind of spin going on.

Example: Fox says illegal immigration is rampant and out of control and that dems only want to have open borders.

Example: Cnn says trump puts babies in cages and wants all immigration to end.

Nether of those stories are true.
They take a little bit of truth and spin it to work on peoples emotions.

I think anyone that believes their chosen media outlet deserves what they get.

Sounds like studying whether water is wet.

What is the point?

Media manipulation has always been and always will be. More interesting would be a study on how many people actually realize that. In my experience, not many.

I'd say they're equally guilty. The left just has more outlets due to ownership.

Yep, especially when it comes to MSM. One right, all the rest left...

Simple Question for you - what's the "right wing media"???

So you're acknowledging both "sides" do it, and want to start a pissing contest about which one is worse?

What a great way to spend a Saturday.

Does infowars' count as right wing or just mainstream like fox? They're fairly big in the alt-right spectrum of political belief. Right now, they are pushing a bunch of fake news stories about veganism being a globalist elite agenda.

Really Alex jones? Vegans are your next big conspiracy? Getting desperate for stories? Alex jones needs his dial turned down a notch. Respect his passion though, just not that nasty miracle bone broth he sells.

Sorry, off topic..

I'd definitely participate though if we do this. I'll look up a Fox News stories for the chosen week. Some silly folk on here think Fox News isn't as bad as CNN.

Is it the media that is the problem? Oh, if only we had someone we could trust, some outlet that didn't lie to us.

The problem is not the media as I see it. The first media was a guy standing on a rock, trying to influence the rest of the tribe. Then there was the guy on the soap box standing on the corner. There has always been the newspapers trying to influence people on national issues. There is always the commercials that promise a better and happier life if only we buy their product.

Yeah, that's it. We take our news like it is a product we are being sold. if we believe in it our lives will be better off and we will be happier in our maga or our socialist utopia.

The problem is those who are willing to believe that their sources are trustworthy while the outlets of ''the enemy'' only spew propaganda.

I think they both push their brand of "truth" as well as lies.

I've seen some real outrage manufacturing from the right as if there isn't enough real stuff going on to be pissed about.

I will never understand the need to lie to score political points when there is more than enough on either side to keep one chewing on a carcass for a while.

My data is a touch old, but one day I spent looking over opensecret.com , the website that shows you where people donate their money-politically. Every MSM except Fox, donateed almost entirely to the left. Fox, meanwhile, donate a majority to the right but still considerable amount to the left.

I would be more interested in a compilation of stories that seem important but neither side reports on. Every time we're fed propaganda, fake news, emotional appeals, and outright lies, we pay attention to that. Dollars to doughnuts there is something more important we should be looking at.

Same here, except we watch the local weather news to stay ahead of the next natural disaster.

BTW, the BBC is pretty much leftist propaganda but with some very interesting History and Science articles.

Fake news is a bit like pornography, nobody can quite describe it but you know it when you see it and a lot of it depends what your into.
