So, I have lost count of the number of times I have seen a thread recently with something to the effect of “the problem with the left” in the title written by someone one the right. Now in my view these threads almost all have the same problem, its usually based on something stupid that someone who they perceive as being left leaning says and all of a sudden it represents the entirety of the left. As if five or six idiots who say they would rather date a gang member rather than a Trump supporter actually represent all of the left to use a recent example. I see a lot of threads like this, “ooohhh look what the leftist reporter wrote about guns to day, this is the problem with the left” or “This has outraged the left because look what this leftist public figure had to say about gay rights”. Someone in a restaurant who refuses to serve Sarah Huckabee, does not represent the left, they just represent bad business decisions.

The point here is quite simple, there are quite a lot of idiots on the “left” who quite clearly don’t quite understand the ideals of liberalism nor do they quite get that idea that in a democracy sometimes your side will lose. This is also true of the right and conservatives, there are idiots on both sides and I think deep down regardless of your political persuasion we all know that what a few idiots say regardless of who they might be don’t actually represent the entirety of a political group. Hillary has said some pretty darn stupid stuff that I disagree with and am sure that Trump has said some pretty daft stuff that folk on the right don’t agree with.

In fact, leftist political leaders just talking utter crap is a pretty big problem because they have the loudest and most stupid voice. The personalities on the left in my view (and this is all my opinion take it or leave it) are all wrong. Say what you like about Trump, disagree with everything he stands for, protest against him or whatever but you cannot say he is not amazing when it comes to inspiring and energising his political base. He is a big personality, he talks about big ideas, huge change and creates this anti-establishment persona. The left doesn’t have anything like that, best we have are a few old hippies who spent too long talking about why he was bad rather than being sexy and exciting themselves. It’s the same problem I think the world over, the right just seems to be more exciting right now, the left is well…. Dull. While the left and busy getting pissed off and outraged every time someone says something that might offend someone somehow the right are talking bigger.

Which kind of brings me on to what I personally think is the biggest problem with the left, this annoying propensity to find outrage wherever we can. I mean really apparently Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of little house on the prairie has had her name removed form a literacy award because some of the language used in her writing was racist. Of course, its bloody racist, she was born in the 1800’s, times change. One of the ideals behind liberalism is progressivism, times have changed, you can’t go back and be outraged over something written 150 years or so ago. We see this all the time, some leftist group who think it’s a good idea to censor stuff because its offensive. Sure, as a liberal I 100% support any laws that prevent discrimination, yup am all for it, full equality, if bob and john want to adopt a transsexual kid and get married and live a life of marital misery then go for it. But getting our panties in a twist because we can’t get unisex toilets is frankly stupid. Political correctness was a really good idea until idiots starting to take it too far and saying that Disney movies made years ago are not politically correct anymore so kids shouldn’t be watching them

Speaking of being outraged let’s talk about the “deplorables” who seem to have transformed into fascist Nazi’s who want to stick burning crucifixes in the front yard of their Mexican neighbours. Some on the right are racists, I am pretty sure that there is more than a handful hear on ATS. I am also sure that there might be a few of my fellow leftists who feel uncomfortable around that man with the black skin or the funny voice. Being on the right it’s not synonymous with being a racist nazi, in doing this all that happens is you end up alienating the very people who you want to bring over to the light side (because the right is the dark side and its pure evil **sarcasm**). Getting triggered every time someone on the right says something stupid rather than actually going after hard political points isn’t working.

So to recap, in my view the problems with the left are quite simple, we have boring political personalities with boring policies, we keep finding outrage where there is none and we really need to stop pretending that the other side are a bunch of evil puppy killers because don’t like their politics.

Even handed post. Good for you.

Hopefully the adults on both sides regain control.

If there ever was a need for 'resistance' it is now... against the nutcases on either end.

I find that if you are on the side of individual freedoms, free expression and equal rights for everyone, then you can never go wrong.

It's a shame that there isn't an ideology for that.

Coming from a conservative, I have to say very well put my friend. It seems only the extremists of either side seem to get the air time. I believe more people out there are moderate and think like us based on my life experiences.

Great analysis. SnF

I would considered myself a Democratic Socialist and Constituionalist. I also strongly support the brand of regualted anti monopolistic market capitalism that favored the smaller business model over the gigantic global vampiric corporate oligarchy.

The greatest economic boom came when corporations were highly taxed and regulated ensuring small business was a viable and competitive model.

Just like uncontrolled Socialism leads to Facism. Uncontrolled Capitalism leads to an elitist brand of forced Communism. With birthright being the only determining factor for success.

I just wish the side I lean towards could see how their inclusion of everyone except those with conservative views has created a party that stands against conservatives rather than standing for anything of solid political and finacial value.

Bernie Sanders was close but he seems to have been nothing more than a hack at this point. It's possible to be impressive, captivating and liberal we just don't seem to have any of those figures at the moment.

Too much stereotypical grouping in politics these days, people are varied yet easily influenced. I'm kinda done with it all for now, neither "side" represent me and the bs ultimately becomes repugnant.

Bit you've got to pick a side, the other parties don't stand a chance... Same everywhere right?

Anyways politics is supposed to be boring, people are too obsessed with controversy and extremism, people only care about the culmination of years of hard work and don't have a second thought for the work done.

Anyways, politics is often misrepresented and people are often misrepresented. It's why I like the idea of the devolution of power regionally here in the UK. Politics does become interesting when one has a stake in the workings of it, hence so many movements... I just feel such potential would be better placed in our own communities when giving locals more power and opportunity.

Everything else is smoke and mirrors from a top heavy system, we live in a world of "go big or go home" with regards to political entities.

There is. It’s titled U.S. Constitution. Unfortunately a lot of politicians in office seem to have forgotten they took an oath to uphold and defend it...

OP, that is about the most reasonable post I’ve seen on ATS in my short time here from an admiited Leftist (I think we can arrange an intervention).

The only part I would take exception with is the guns. The lefts “leaders”, not the far left loons alone, have made it clear they want the guns. Including the retired SC Justice and multiple Congressional and State leaders. I know there are people on the left who support 2A. It is unfortunate they will not publicly blow back against those who want to do away with both the 2A and the ability for law abiding citizens to protect themselves agaonst criminals, who will never just lay down their guns.

Sounds to me like you are transitioning to more centrist, a few more years you might even reach a more conservative point of view such as librarian. Ever look into the SAM Party? You are kinda in that wheelhouse with that OP.

I have actually always considered myself left of centre and just critical of all politics.

SnF because thank you for making a very good point that needs to be recognized by everyone. Unfortunately, people from both sides seem to be too stubborn to admit that this is true.

very well said, agree completely especially how the problem is on both sides extremes.

The majority of people will be right around the center, and its astonishing to me that we have let the freaks on the left and the right take over.

Hopefully everybody is waking up, I like some of what trump has done, don't like some but the absolute bet thing his presidency should be doing is make people take a hard look at the politicians.

EDIT: Oh and by the way, yea you are a dirty leftist... but thats ok I wouldnt want to live in a world where everybody thought the same as me... that would be boring.

There is a very popular bookcharacter called 'Jim Knopf' - author is Michael Ende (long time dead). He is the writer of The Neverending Story (a must read). Jim Knopf is a black kid and in the book at one time someone called him 'kleiner Neger' without wanting to lower him down. Its a book from the 70s. And a few years ago there was a discussion about wether to change this or not. They dont changed it. Luckily. Its all about subtext.

If you in search of good books for your kids (and yourself too), you have to read Ende. He was a genius.

You might be boring, I'll give you that. And both political mainstream wingnuts (centre-left and centre-right) have been killing millions of innocent folks in their stupid Total War. That's the invisible gorilla in the room right there.

They are all evil scumbags because of their politics, yes. I tend to call out neoliberal and neoconservative trash regulary, because that's what it is. And when you can't see the writing on the wall by now, you probably have no clue what "the left" stands for, either.
