Thats exactly what i am talking about....

...our pride stems from the laurels of our grandfathers, not from our own actions. In fact, i'd bet that if people were honest with themselves they'd be less than satisfied with the world they are leaving their children.

What do we, as a nation, have to be proud of today? What have we done? Besides let our government get away with some pretty gnarly stuff?

Pride shouldn't be tied to the actions of our grandfathers...its resting on their laurels.

Could you please define what an American is?

Besides birth location.

What country do you live in ?
Are you proud to belong to that country ?

I'm a human on the 3rd rock from the sun.

So , no reason for you to be in the thread ?
The question was , "are you proud to be a US citizen?".
Nothing about "citizens of the world"...
Or "standing on the moon" as you say.

Your thread? Your rules?

News Flash: an open ended question allows varied viewpoints.

That you don't want to accept my viewpoint is not relevant.

What a ridiculous reply....
Not my thread, nor my rules.
The ORIGINAL TOPIC
Get it ?
Got it ?
Good
Dang , I hope so...
Done with you ...

I know you weren't asking me...

Yet , I wasn't asking the initial question.
The OP was.

But you did ask the subsequent question.

You know what they say... Don't ask the question if you don't want to know the answer!

So , logically , I should not have gotten an answer from anyone else.

Yet, here we are...

No, I'm not going to be proud of anything I was born into. That would be like me being proud of my brown eyes. I'm also not going to be proud of accomplishments done in the name of my country that I had no part in. "We went to the Moon!" "Oh, was that us, because I don't remember anything about me flying to the Moon or working on any of the components."

I love this thread..
A well disguised "outing" of ignorance understanding the original OP of a thread.
And a drawing out of "outsiders" who find themselves addicted to posting on anything US related.
Well done.

There's much to be proud of, and there's things to be not so proud of...

But, I'm a proud American, and really don't give much of a damn if some disagree.

Yes , I have found myself again debating against ignorance.
This time , in the form of a debate in understanding what the OP was originally about.
Another lame , useless debate in which someone fails to get the idea behind an ORIGINAL POST.
But it ends right now...

Got a proud American right here, wouldn't wanna live in any other country although there are a few I'd like to visit. I think it's sad when others aren't proud but hey we live in a free country and they can leave. Of course they can complain all they want as well.

Ummm...nor should you give a damn about that...

There should be as many individual and unique answers to the Op’s question as there are people residing in this country...

Each response is built from individual experience and perspective...and can be neither right for any other...or wrong for that individual...

IMHO...of course...

so i am in mellow out mode canada style and i am just letting my thoughts on this go.

it is such a strange concept. such a strange kind of misuse of the word yet so many people have 'pride'
it on clothes
its in songs
its tattooed on people

people let you know they are proud son...... # yeah

btw i am not saying they shouldnt. i am not saying it is stupid. i might clown a little bit cause im a dick but i honestly dont understand it. i dont knock people that do but i dont have it and truly am curious as to how others feel..

thank you to all that got into it and had some discussion.

but of course there are many posts of the "im proud and if theyre not then leave" type. like exactly that.

so are those people 'proud' but dont even know why?
maybe they are proud and just want to tell me like the other dude that they dont have to answer? thats cool too. absolutely dont have to.

but im proud and hike off if youre not is kind of a # answer to an honest question

Why? Because if you take care of your nation it should take care of you. There are many reasons to be a proud american, from the many diverse cultures that built her to the many things she leads the way in, all the way to ending the 2nd world war thats claimed so many lives. But if you # on your nation then yes, you should probably leave. Are you having a massive neurological flatulence preventing you from understanding why a person may love there country?

Guess if you didn’t dedicate your life to wearing the uniform of your country’s military to defend the 93% who wouldn’t, couldn’t, or just didn’t want to, it doesn’t make sense. As one of the 7% of Americans willing to make that sacrifice (and over a lifetime at that) please forgive me if I agree to disagree.

why is it a misuse of the word?

We should be proud to be Americans because we are unique . Should an immigrant that comes here legally and earns his American citizenship not be proud to be an American?

I grew up saying the pledge and standing for the anthem and putting my hand on my heart and I am still proud when I do it.

We are supposed to be proud to be Americans ......
