Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina running her first campaign, ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's 14th congressional district on Tuesday, CNN projects, in the most shocking upset of a rollicking political season. An activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Ocasio-Cortez won over voters in the minority-majority district with a ruthlessly efficient grassroots bid, even as Crowley -- the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House -- outraised her by a 10-to-1 margin.

Well now look at that. How do the Democratic Party leaning members here feel about this?

Should be as big of a shock as Eric Cantor losing his primary to a Tea Party Candidate.

Do you think this is good or bad for the Democrats?

At least they didn't put the fix on this time.

I'm really interested in what the Left leaning people here think.

I think its pretty much a wash, yea the Dems lose a powerful guy who knew who to approach and what not, and gain an inexperience person.

But outside of that.. meh.. progressive candidate over a mainstream candidate in a very very blue part of a blue city, don't think it means much to anyone other than mainstream democrat politicians, they may have just been put on notice.

Left of center.

Don't care.

My health insurance is still absurdly high.
I'm still getting taxed an absurd amount of money and I don't really see where or why.

Her campaign manager is an anti Semite and a racist, but Dems don’t care about that.

The voters are speaking... they want to see change. Alexandria's message was basically the same as Bernie Sanders' campaign for Presidency.

Free tuition, medicare for everyone, jobs for everyone, etc.

The problem with promises like that? Simple economics and human nature. Good luck getting your fellow legislators and constituents to come on board for a platform that hurts their wallets.

Sounds like Joe Crowley never had any competition in previous elections. He always ran unopposed in the Demcratic Primaries before and didn't really know who to campaign in his District. The actual election against whomever the Republicans ran was always an foregone conclusion in that heavily Democratic area.

She beat him the old fashioned way, going door to door and speaking to her new constituents.

I find it refreshing even if I may not agree with her political stances.

Ignore your Base of voters and you'll get this.

www.google.com...

In 2013 while running for city council, Lopez-Pierre sent a racist, homophobic email to a black supporter of his opponent, Mark Levine. The supporter, named Brain Benjamin, was called a “N***er” five times, a “Bitch” six times and saying he is a “weak, little short man who sucks White/Jewish cock.” Lopez-Pierre also threatened Benjamin with violence.

Her platform is so extreme I am wondering if her primary campaign was covertly supported by local conservatives. In the same way McGovern's 1972 presidential primary campaign was being supported by pro-Nixon forces.

The 28 year old is far far left, more liberal than the moderate democrat she ousted. I don't know whether that is good or not, extremes are never good.

At the same time, change is good.

As much as I am an enemy of Democratic Socialism, it is amusing to watch the Democratic Gatekeepers lunacy and attempt damage control.

The thing about Democratic Socialism is that it is basically Capitalism light, Capitalism with free Health Care and the problem with Free Healthcare is that it can never exist within Capitalism because the "Money" has to come from somewhere, Free Health Care would only work in an economic system that abolishes the "Monetary system" and this spooky idea of "inherent value in objects and paper"

Thank you for the reply. Seems to be a very nasty person. Wonder why her opponent didn't bring it up forcefully.
Pretty weird company to keep for a Progressive.
