The OP was about new laws restricting the online sales of knives - it’s drifted a little since then.
The laws regarding carrying knives in the UK is long established and was expanded to cover ‘offensive weapons’. I joke not when I say there was an
arrest not far from here when someone was threatened with a dildo. From memory you used to be able to carry upto a 6 inch fixed blade. This was
rediced to 3 inch folding years later in the 90’s.
There were subsequent restrictions brought in on zombie knives and samurai swords when they were poularised and symbols in gang culture. In my
opinion these can be considered ornamental or even art and shouldn’t be illegal to own. However why you need to be walking round the streets of
Croydon with a samurai sword is beyond comprehension.
For me this isn’t about changing the law regarding carrying knives. It’s the restriction on purchasing and owning them. It’s stupid and as many
posters have said what’s the point when you can just go to a shop and buy one. The guys carrying them aren’t going to hack through undergrowth or
sit and whittle some. They carry them for one purpose.
Your 2nd amendment rights grant you the right to bear arms so the situations are very different. Pretty much everything is outlawed here and has been
for a long time - it’s crap. There are pressure groups in the US trying to ban various types of assault rifles - again a different situation as
those rights are enshrined in law.
1) the new law restricting knife sales is stupid and won’t work
2) there is an issue with knife crime in London that is primarily social
3) there are some types of knives that you can not justify walking round with in public
4) punishment and policing is too soft
That’s the point I was trying to make
