THIS THREAD CONTAINS SPOILER INFO

So anyway we went to see "Ocean's 8" yesterday. The plot- Debbie Ocean (Danny Ocean's sister) gets out of jail for a crime she was framed for and hatches a plot to steal diamonds from a museum and use them partly for gain for the crew and partly to frame the person who framed her. At the end they get away with everything. They congratulate themselves for being very cool and clever for stealing from the museum. They use the money for their own enrichment and also use elderly women to sell the stolen jewels for them, putting them at risk also. It's not clear whether the elderly women know they are selling stolen jewels or if they think they are doing acting jobs.

In the original with Frank Sinatra they steal the money from casinos only to lose it at the end with only a small amount going to the widow and young son of one of the group. I have seen all the "Oceans" movies and the remake with George Clooney is one of my favorites. Somehow it seems okay to steal money from a casino, because you are stealing from the Mob. Now in "Ocean's 12" they do get caught for the theft they did in "Ocean's 11".

I don't think the film "Ocean's 8" works at all because they steal from a museum and get to keep the loot. It is a morally bankrupt film with a negative message. We were really disappointed and regretted spending the money to see the film in a theater.

I appreciate the review.

I had already decided I wasn’t going to waste my money and you have helped me solidify that as a good decision. I would rather spend my money on Deadpool 2.

Your first mistake was expecting a "message" from a movie.

Your second was to see a movie that is clearly just a cash cow franchise now.

I saw the trailer for this movie when I went to deadpool.
They lost me when they stole things that they couldn't really sell.

Movies like this make me lol. Release a ‘women empowerment’ movie. Because women can steal as well as men. Women then spend mad money on the film because, cannot lose your ‘women card’ by not seeing it. How is they movie, most won’t say anything negative, because saying something negative is as mysoginistic AF.

except the OP gave a plot-based reason for disliking it, and a feminist website also reviewed it negatively for plot-based reasons.

All movies generally have a message. The one here seems to justify crazed lieberal type governments by justifying that it's ok to steal from the people (through a museum in this case which is allegedly a public asset). The stealing is further called to be accepted by using women in "empowering roles" to reduce the amount of criticism for the predominantly ethical bankruptcy of the plot. It basically seems just another franchise gone sideways to promote an agenda, much like starwars. There really doesn't seem to be any point to movies these days other than creating them for the sake of propogandizing a bad idea. Best to look at all movies initially as advertisements for the flavour-of-the-day ideologies of criminals, governments, globalists and special interest groups, because it seems movies and TV are just that.

yes, movies play to dominant cultural ideologies, for good or for ill. especially studio movies.

there's tons of movies with morally bankrupt plots about heists. no need to single this one out just because you're mad it has women in it.

Women are better at playing the hot eye candy roles with little to no lines being protected by strong he-men, make them movies and people will throw money at them. Plus the older gals get all the maternal roles with drama and intrigue.

This stuff is just another flop in a long line of flops starting with the ghostbusters fem-Nazi redo.

You ever had friend that constantly pushes another person or idea on you? You know the person being pushed is an idiot or it's an idiotic idea, it's abrasive and eventually wears on your patience, but you try to remain tolerant for the sake of the friendship, you still don't want to hear the crap constantly as it's alienating, devisive and denigrating. Feminism is like that, we are being bombarded with BS, almost hourly, patience and tolerance is wearing thin.

We don't need this crap in every aspect of our lives and it's not women's fault, they are also being pressurized to conform with an almost alien agenda, many however see it for what it is, alienating, divisive and denegrating. There is a highly militant core of misanderists that continue to use gender as a weapon which is being promoted by the msm and hollyweird, hence the ef'd up movie plots.

I love women, almost everything about them, so you can't use that lol. If you can't see what's being done through social engineering, I guess you're just not looking.

The biggest problem is, normal everyday people do not form groups to pool monies to throw at Hollywood. It's all in where the money comes from. The progressives have huge a-hole kabillionaires who create massive foundations where tossing a few hundred thousand or even a few million towards their agenda is nothing to them, just a drop in the bucket. Then the People have to suffer through their paid programming at the box office and on their TV's.

OK, I'll diverge a bit.

There is a right way and wrong way to set up the so-called women's empowerment flick like this, and IMO, Ocean's 8 took that path by spinning off with a relative of an original cast member and making a new story off that. They didn't pull a Ghostbusters and reboot everything, trying to erase everyone's childhood by ret-conning everything that happened before.

But here it sounds like they knee-capped it by making it a morally bankrupt plot.

But going back to what I said before, would the Ghostbusters movie have been as offensive to so many if they had said one of the new characters was the daughter of one of the previous Ghostbusters and then had the older cast member/s cameo to pass on the torch to her and her new crew of buddies?

Granted, then the movie was knee-capped by being just plain awful. But at least the whole plot idea wouldn't have been so offensive on top of it.

I saw the film because I was a fan of the "Oceans" series, not because I'm female. I was interested to see what they would do with it and after reading 1 good review of the film I was excited about seeing it. I was just severely disappointed that the "ladies" pulled off a theft from a museum and got to keep the money. The (female) person who saw it with me was saying "I can't believe Sandra Bullock would do a movie like this! Shame on her!"

The movie did make a big deal over the fact that the jewelry which was stolen had originally been created for European royalty and that all the pieces were insured. So I guess what they are saying is, its okay to steal from rich people because their stuff is insured. Problem is, whatever your income, there is probably someone, somewhere, to whom you seem "rich", and in their mind it just might be a justification for stealing from you- and movies like this back up that mentality.
