We have the modern version of royalty: Hollywood.

It has a few advantages. We can worship them when they are young, cute, and entertaining. When they get old, crotchety, or embarrassing we can kick them to the curb.

If Prince Charles made a Rosanne type tweet, Brits would still be stuck with him. But I'm guessing there's a taxpayer funded staff dedicated solely to keep the royals from publicly embarrassing themselves.
