Is it possible that the dr. is against your having a child because, if you became pregnant, you would have to stop taking your psych meds and also deal with the extreme hormonal flucuations that occur as a result of being pregnant? Many mentally stable women have an extremely difficult time dealing with the emotional ups and downs that come with bearing a child. There are also a large number of women who suffer from severe post-partem depression after their babies are born, and I wonder if your doctor isn't afraid that, while you may never hurt your child, you may become capable of hurting yourself.

Do you have your illness enough under your control, that none of these possibilities are likely to come about?

Babies are wonderful little creatures, but remember that while you may want a child because it would make you happy to have one, your happiness is not all that is at stake here. You are talking about bringing a new life into this world, one that has never experienced anything-happy or sad-and your ability to provide for its happiness and well-being should be your driving concern in this decision.

The emotional stress that raising a child places on parents, can leave even the most stable adult teetering on the brink of insanity. It is no easy task, to say the least!

Haven't you read the Seth books, channeled by Jane Roberts? Seth reveals the cause of schizophrenia, which is a lack of the chemical element called lithium, but this entity also warns that it's not as easy as simply making an afflicted child take lithium because its mind has already deteriorated to a greater or lesser extent, maybe beyond a point of no-return. I don't know whether taking lithium would work in cases where the disease manifests in the adult stage.

I assume that you are a mother. Smile. You are correct in everything you say. My illness is under as much control as it can be. I will never be who I used to be, but I thank my lucky stars that I listen to my physicians and follow every order...including the birth control. It is because of them that I am alive, and have a life. That I am writing. That I have a roof over my head. That I (most of the time) make it to work 3x a week. I thank everyone each time I see them, and tell them God bless you, from the head director and physician to the pharmacist aid who hands me my baggie of meds.

And thank you all for your insight. I needed an unbiased opinion. It wasn't disappointing to hear The Truth. I'm not crushed over it. I accepted it not long ago...

There are no substitutes, true. But there are healthy alternatives. I'm thinking of finding an honest organization where I can help a child in need. Lord knows there's thousands of them right here in the US.

I can't be a "Big Sister," for obvious reasons, so I think that it's a good idea to find a charity.

Thank you, and God Bless you all. I will see you around....

Dot.

Hi Dot,
I don't know much about your peticular illness so don't know what will work and wouldn't. If you were ever going to go off the psyche drugs.. or even just to consider it perhaps preparing a range of different therapies to try and minumalise the symptoms as much as possible. I don't know about natural therapies.. and by themselves they may be useless.. but if you had 'herbal' [under supervision.. could be risky] in conjunction with a specialised diet, cognitive therapy [I don't know if they have that for schizophrenia], things like biofeedback/neurofeedback.. though it's effectiveness that depends on the type of illness.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov...

Just throwing around a couple of ideas- my experience is more with depression/autism/anxiety so any ideas/suggestions I have might be way off the mark and unsuitable.
Another idea could be getting a surragate but I know that could be a difficult task in itself.. and it may've already been mentioned.

I'm really sorry to hear of your situation and I hope you can find a way to have a child and still maintain your health. I'm sure you would make a great mother.
