This is an interesting one, Under the Soviet system, Medical costs , Education and Housing were free, or greatly subsidized. Children were brought up in a system which gave them structure and purpose, where their natural talents were allowed to blossom. The stress levels were low and life was more predictable. the economy was a command driven system. Now the World has tried this system, rejected it and is now trying a Capitalist model . Could we be at the point where Russia historically, does its trick and closes the door on the West. Then returns itself from a Socialist model back to a fully Communist system. When asked over fifty percent of the people who have lived under the Communist model say that life was better than the present system.
What we know of the daily life in Communist Russia has been greatly distorted by a media with vested interests. So if given the choice under the present tightening economic system that works for the chosen few or a Soviet model in the light of what's gone before and the present state of the world, could we possibly be on the threshold of a return to a modified but fully functioning Red Republic.?

Under Putin? I seriously doubt that. If Putin were to disappear, yes, maybe.

Putin's not hated in Russia like he is here in the west, why wouldn't it be done under Putin, he's been dictator there for some time now.

I would think if their were a return, the proviso that should be written into the manifesto, would be that the eldest member of the Communist party would automatically be elected president for life. So if you got a bad one like Stalin he like the pope would have a limit . Seriously I can see it happening , the Western debt levels have reached a point where they cant be sustained. Russia and China are dumping the dollar for gold, so they can remain isolated from the sharp end.

For what it's worth, Russia and the USSR aren't the same things. The USSR was a union of the current countries of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. I think it would be nearly impossible for them to bring it back.

Freedom is a responsibility that fewer and fewer people seem to want.

And it was failing miserably until they started opening up to the western world and others including China. How would a withdrawal back into the old Soviet Union style benefit them ? They sell an awful lot of oil to Western Europe.

Russian exports of fossil fuels

Give Putin a little bit of credit. Bet he likes money too.

The Soviet Republics like the "Stans" would hurry back , The Baltic States probably not, but it all depends if the Capitalist system can deliver a reasonable standard of living for the masses. It isn't happening in the USA or anywhere else, unless things change, historically its a numbers game, with AI more people will be out of work , the rich will be targets. They will then get repressive and the same old story repeats itself.

Russia and Putin already kicked out western food, and fast food chains, even to the point of burning and burying millions of tons of American produce and goods.

Everyone laughed at them, and said they would fall apart and people would starve. Nope.
They actually had a culinary and agricultural revolution.

But there is always a catch. As a result they wanted more from the bread basket of Europe, Ukraine, and look what's happening there. Honestly, I think a full communist government can't work with the way humans actually work, we are conservative by nature, and once someone else impedes on one little aspect of your life and you see the truth of what a communist government can become, you get problems.
I feel like Russia will slowly adopt a healthy liberal middle ground in the end, it will be socialist at the foundation, but tradition, and hard working people will thrive as well.

The peoples of Russia are in a sophisticated modern society, I would like to see us as all friends.

They have extreme nuclear capabilities.
Like us.

Think of all the fun we'd have working together and visiting each other's countries.

We don't really have a better choice.

The Soviet model required the subjugation of a large number of countries, and the repression of the population to keep them in check. Attempting to paint a picture that the Soviet Union was a nice place to live, would be revisionism at its best.

Russia today is highly corrupt and a de facto dictatorship. The country is run for the benefit of a few who have grown exceedingly rich from state corruption and nepotism. Russia won't slip into some cosy communist idyll, because that never existed, but some of the mechanics of communism are being used by the Russian authorities to keep power, such as control of the press and the removal of political difference.

When all your trade partners are capitalist, and you're communist, and your country cannot provide all your populace needs, communism or any type of socialism is doomed to failure. The only way for any form of communist/socialist system to work it must be one hundred percent separate from capitalistic trade partners and be self sufficient.

We'll never know if any form of a pure socialist system will work because no country is truly entirely self sufficient enough to find out.

they will never return, they don't have the population necessary to move into that political system, they eat their babies.... fact. And none of their cars have reverse... no turning back to the 'Good Ol' Days'.

The Russians still control mostof the former Soviet states through the back door, or through frozen conflicts. To be honest nothing really has changed bar the Baltics states going NATO and Putin certainly is glad to be rid of modern day Nazi states of little significance in terms of resources compared to what Russia has. Part of Ukraine is lost for now and part is back under Russian control. Maybe the other part will return one day, the west can try to get it hands on Kiev but you can't move the state by always being bordered by big brother next door. Influence will always be great. The military alliance still exists for the USSR states, it just called a new name now the CSTO. That makes Russia a potent power with its modern day USSR military renamed but still under its control.

You must not have ever known anyone that lived under the system at the time it was in place. Every single Soviet expat I have ever known loathed the communist system.

All human systems of government are essentially the same, you have a ruling elite, which have access, to the best resources , and the rest, who get handed out just enough to keep them below the level of revolt. The system that gets the maths wrong pays the price, because the change always comes from the bottom who have the least to loose. When the pressure goes on , the ruling class, lie and say all is well, because it is for those that have all the goodies. Then they have to get rough and lock the dissent up, change is always the last thing that occurs So essentially if you change the names, of President to Czar, and his faithful inner circle to Barons. All political systems are the same. If you can operate a system where the goodies are fairly distributed its stable. Greed will always be the essential flaw, until its addressed in a Constitutional form. Communism had a chance, but it died of the same old disease. Capitalism seems to be going the same way.
