Hello ATS. I found this article to be an interesting read concerning race and the political divide in the US. In this article, scientists gauge the political leanings of White and BLack Americans before Obama came into office and after. According to their research Whites and Blacks viewed Climate Change as being real at about the same percentage in 2008 however, the views of Whites changed dramatically after Obama came into office and tried to make changes to the coal and oil industries in order to better serve the environment.

“I run into a lot of people that really don’t like Obama at all,” one seller of coal-rolling equipment told Slate. “If he’s into the environment, if he’s into this or that, we’re not. I hear a lot of that.” In some instances, the practice has taken on an explicitly racial tone, as drivers publish videos of themselves rolling coal on Black Lives Matter protesters. Why would anyone spend so much money to do something so hostile and self-defeating? New research may offer some insight.

After Barack Obama took office, white Americans were less likely to see climate change as a serious problem, according to a recent peer-reviewed paper published in the journal Environmental Politics. The study further finds evidence of a link between racial resentment and climate change denial. This is not to suggest that all climate deniers are racists, merely that racial resentment may, in part, be driving climate denial. “There has been increasing polarization on this issue — and this is one thing my own research has been examining for a while — trying to figure out what are some of the root causes of this polarization,” said study author Salil Benegal, a political scientist at DePauw University. Advertisement Researchers have thoroughly investigated the link between ideology and attitudes toward climate change, finding that conservatives are significantly more likely to reject climate science. This is not because they misapprehend the facts, but because they are taking their cues from conservative elites, many of whom have close ties to the fossil fuel industry.

Thus, while scientists have grown more certain about the causes and perils of climate change, attitudes toward the carbon crisis have become more and more polarized. While Democrats have grown more concerned about climate change, among Republicans, climate denial has become increasingly calcified. Separately, researchers have studied how racial resentment among white Americans has worsened economic anxiety and driven opposition to welfare, Medicaid, and other government initiatives. (As it happens, white Americans are the largest beneficiaries of these programs.) Writing in The Washington Post, political scientists Adam Enders and Jamil Scott explained that, while racial resentment has remained stable over time, “More and more, white Americans use their racial attitudes to help them decide their positions on political questions such as whom to vote for or what stance to take on important issues including welfare and health care.” They added, “Barack Obama’s rise to the presidency further strengthened the relationship between racial resentment and political attitudes.”

Does it all boil down to money, power, and control? Has there been a secret coup behind closed doors against Obama and his efforts to curb climate change? I have noticed that Trump is trying to undo everything Obama did even to the detriment of the environment or the health and well being of people living on this Earth. He's undoing environmental pacts, reopening pipelines, destroying protected national parks, destroying health or aid programs in the US, and people are applauding his actions...? I just don't get it. Why would conservatives want to destroy everything Obama did even if some of those things are good things? Is it for money...wealth...power? Humans can't grow infinite wealth in a finite system of living things; it's just not possible. We'll destroy ourselves before this happens. As always....What says ATS?

That's the biggest bunch of BS I've ever read.

Views on climate change don't have anything to do with racial resentment.

Now, there's always the possibility that people won't support certain regulations that would destroy their livelihoods.

I think more people are educating themselves on the issue of climate change.

That's why it isn't selling.

And frankly, I find the assumption that the position of climate change having a racial bias is insulting.

Also, when you enter into the discussion with the assumption that Obama was trying to save the planet and Trump is trying to destroy it, you've already telegraphed your position and it makes honest debate impossible.

Of course if your only intent was to call everyone who doesn't believe in man-made climate change "racist" and to call Trump a destroyer of the planet then I think you've done an outstanding job!

This is a play on statistics. Basically, if you don't agree with our position on climate change then you are a racist. How to close down discussion, eh?

"Its the economy, stupid"

I think that Obamas failure was taking away without returning. Jobs lost need to be replaced or the proletariat will want heads on pikes

Tale as old as time.

One of Obama's biggest failures, in my mind, was not addressing the fabrication of racial tensions and 'income inequality' in America.
I live in Britain where you can have your house paid for, your car bought and still have enough left for a shop in M&S. You just have to be from another country to qualify for it...... Real inequality.

Obama had a chance to avoid this outcome, as Trump seems to be doing now. Instead he played into the hands of the socialists and social engineers. He was a through and through leftist espousing ridiculous identity politics his entire tenure in office. He did so much damage to my person view of America, I'm not sure how other people saw it.

Sorry, but "Thinkprogress" as a source?

Let me 'splain ya something. OP's premised upon stories written by authors for blatantly biased websites like Thinkprogress are just not very interesting, nor are they very compelling from the standpoint of serious intellectual inquiry. Put another way, Thinkprogress is basically the leftist version of Alex Jones.

How did you miss that? Or does the bias attendant with TP so well conform to your own world view that it just had to be true as far as you were concerned?

No one could possibly prove a link between climate change denial and racial resentment. Its as bogus as trying to link a prefernce to white toilet paper and racial resentment.

What does explain climate change denial and differences before/after Obama is pretty obvious.......economics! Its about jobs and financial security v. unemployment and financal insecurity, plain and simple. Obama used climate change to justify killing whole industries and thousands of jobs.

But of course, it is after all "Thinkprogress" where all problems are to be laid at the feet of racist white people who hate Democrats.

Uh, no.

Even accepting for the sake of this discussion that the poll numbers do in fact accurately reflect opinions -- and that's a pretty big "if" -- it still completely ignores the gross manipulation of data and numbers in computer models, and many other such questionable actions by the industry that casts serious doubt on the validity of their claims and projections. And, of course, it doesn't take into account the many many predictions by global warming alarmists that have failed miserably.

Forget racism. The true science just isn't there.

Nice try. Just so you know the reasons people don't bow at the altar of climate change are:
1. We don't see a lot of empirical evidence that the earth is warming in our daily lives.
2. We all know that the climate changes so calling it climate change is meaningless.
3. NONE of the climate models the scientists have created have been accurate. So it makes it hard to believe they even know what they are doing.
4. The whole thing has been politicized. Its not because of Obama's race that we aren't sold, it's because he started the conversation about climate change with raising taxes and redistributing wealth to other nations. More of his commy BS.
5. Nobody has even came up with a solution. So when you tell me you are going to raise my taxes and raise the cost of fossil fuels which takes money directly out of my pocket, then I am going to expect more in return then "if we are lucky we MIGHT lower the temperature .2 degrees over the next 50 to 100 years."
6. We don't like the idea of expanded global government, which is what would be needed to make this work. Further, a case could be made that the real point behind all of this is to expand a global government entity.

Basically, its not racism. It's poor salesmanship. They tried to create a need (pain) but did a poor job. Then they tried to sell us the pleasure of a solution, but it wasn't much of a solution.

I think they better abandon ship and come out with something new. It needs to be scarier (more pain) with a more definite solution (guaranteed pleasure). I suggest convincing us we are under butt probing alien attack, but that they have devised a full proof way of killing butt probing aliens.

I went from not believing in AGW to understanding the facts and reluctantly agreeing we are warming. I still hold out hope that man's contribution is much, much smaller than predicted, for lots of reasons. But all that happened during Obama's reign.

All Obama did was screw up my ability to have insurance. More than doubled my cost, then when I couldn't afford it, I got fined.

He was a tool for the system. Bush 2.0. But his ineffectiveness had nothing to do with how white folks view climate change IMHO. I'm just tired of being called racists because I don't like him or his policies. If he was purple and carried a purse, I still would think the same of him.

Ah,
Well this is just the natural progression of twisted leftist logic.

If you don't support handing over all your money in taxes to support the alarmist global warming schemes then you're obviously racist.

There are possibly some points to the OP, but I think it's minor and only effects a very small minority of Americans.

The real divide is politically. Republicans don't believe in Climate change and Democrats do. That's your wake up call right there. LOL It's dumb to assume that all Republicans are either smart enough to see the truth or dumb enough not to see it and vice a versa. So what's at the root?

It's our news and media that we watch. MSNBC is main stream democrat...they believe in Climate Change, or at least their Billionaire overlords want you to believe it, therefore their Democrat viewers will too. Fox news is main stream republican, they don't believe in climate change, or at least their billionaire overlords don't want you to believe it, so their viewers, Republicans, won't either.

It's really ashame to see so many brainwashed people out there. Doesn't it bother you guys that you're being brainwashed??

Turn off the news...and the political websites like Breitbart and huffpost and read what actual scientists are saying.

And one more thing. I don't know anyone who didn't like Obama because he was half black. People don't like Obama because he is an arrogant, egotistical, socialist prick.

What money and taxes though? We've been hearing about Global warming since the 80s and they never raised or taxes...in 38 years! LOL

Your opinion about what are "Good things" is subjective and clearly not shared by everyone.

That being true; most of Obama's measures where created through executive order or passed congress along strict party lines ... as such they where never lasting ... it just took the next Republican president to come along and they where going to be undone. Obama new this thats why he pulled out all the stops to try and insure a democratic president to succeed him.

I don't know that. I mean taxes are going up all the time, always new taxes and always going up for this reason or that reason. You would have a hard time convincing me that a new gas tax is a sneaky carbon tax related to global warming and not a scheme to get money for infrastructure. There is no carbon tax not yet. Not in the USA.

Then you'd have to convince me that hundreds of thousands of Scientists and support staff and interns and professors and grad students and researchers etc are in on this conspiracy to raise a carbon tax. LOL

Oh bloody hell. Look at the site. There may not be carbon tax in the US... yet, but there are carbon taxes in Europe. It's not like they haven't tried here in the US, but I mean they can only suck us so dry. Between spending $600 billion a year on defense, giving benefits to illegal aliens who have babies here, and a healthcare system that is so messed up that we can barely afford to go to the doctor or buy meds, commercials about how US children are starving to death and we need to give their families more money when i barely see a kid that doesn't look like Fat Bastard on Austin powers. We only have so much freaking money they can take before we are all living in cardboard boxes.
