Gambling is a tax on stupid people.

Yes and no. My family is pretty involved with running casinos. There's a lot of actual business decisions to be made, and casinos would rather not drive someone to financial ruin, it's as bad for them as alcoholics are for the beer industry.

Someone I had a long relationship with was a professional gambler as well, on horse races. She made well over 7 figures a year doing that.

If you're a casual gambler though, especially on casino games, you will lose your money.

The lottery maybe.

Sports gambling is a "skill game competition."

Actually, they didn't allow anything. What they did was they took away the federal government's ability to disallow it. Big difference.

You will lose all games of chance. You must be very, very good to come out ahead in games of skill, but it can be done. I've met a lot of people in my life who make a living off of it.

I'm reluctant to bring the paranormal into the discussion but some people have "mojo" and my lady is one of them.
She doesn't count cards but at Black Jack she has an uncanny ability to just "know"....

Not everyone who gambles is stupid. There are people who engage the world with their minds and can do well in risk assessment, ratios...the types of things that make gamblers good at what they do. There are others who just do it for R&R. There are vape raffle groups I am part of, but rarely participate in, where people gamble away via raffles a dollar here and there.

My mom makes a killing on lottos. No idea who, must just be luck or something. But she gets at least 1 10k winner a year, along with thousands of smaller winners. She collects used lottos for her taxes to help offset winnings.

I didn't say anyone was stupid, just that most gambling is designed so that the house comes out ahead. Games of chance such as slots, blackjack, roulette, and so on are guaranteed losses if played long enough (though it's theoretically possible to beat the house over the long term in blackjack). Chances is against you. On the other hand you have games of skill where the house provides a forum and takes a cut, but you're actually playing against all the other participants. That would be things like poker, sports betting, and so on. In those, if you know the game well enough, can do the proper math, and put in the time you can walk away with a profit.

Just look at something like Draft Kings, 90% of the payouts in that goto a group of less than 10 people who are very good at the game.
