Note in the original 1969 version, he says "Floating Round my Tin Can"....as in being weightless, floating around.
Doesn't matter either way, nothing to do with the fabled Mandalay effect.
He is the original author and performer of this song, he can sing it any damn way he wants.
Ever think he changed the lyrics of the song, each time he sang it, just to mess with peoples heads?
He was Ziggy Stardust after all, and David Bowie was just his alter ego, if you don't believe me, ask David Jones.
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here Am I sitting in a tin can Far above the world
Same as it ever was
Look where my hand was
Time isn't holding up
Time isn't after us
Same as it ever was

Bowie stated he can't even remember recording a whole album in 1976
Argue with Bowie, leave me out of it
I just reported what I heard then because I knew I would get some people come along, I linked an article
So don't carry on at me

Was listening to Bowie this morning while getting ready for the day...
Space Oddity was on (Major Tom). I noticed a significant lyric change that stands out like a sore thumb. Skip to 2:15.He used to sing:
"..floating in my tin can"
He now says:
"..sitting in a tin can"
