Perhaps there really are no more or too few warriors left in Germany's pool. Look east a few hundred miles to Ukraine and look how well an underprepared military was able to defend against a cunning plot. Just because your forefathers were responsible for the world's worst atrocities doesn't mean you're predestined to be the same if you're anything but a mollycoddle.

Hi Guys and Girls,

If DASS has components that are no longer made how are the pods being built?

If and new version with newer components exists you would need to design it on the same basis. Same signalling /networking, same loom, same voltage.

Or are the new Ex's flying with brick or concrete in the pods?

Germany is divided since WW2. No one wants a Fourth Reich. Neither does Germans want to align under US NATO to war against Russia.

Some would say a federated EU (as that is where they are going) is a Fourth Reich, or perhaps a Nouvelle République if Macron gets his way. That's why the UK are ducking out. That's another discussion, eh?

Hi Rab,

What happens quite frequently is obsolescence and partners and the production companies do last time buys of components that become obsolete. It is quite easily taken as spin by the press, but the AESA radar for Typhoon had many obsolete components before it was even in production. They can design out the obsolete parts which is expensive and would be done in block upgrades. You are correct, they can redesign units with new parts and the customer can decide to use up its "obsolete stock" or purchase and qualify the aircraft for the new parts, in some cases its a binary decision.

Germany entered the DASS scene late having decided not to have it, they then decided to have it and took their workshare, it is entirely possible that when obsolete parts in their workshare, the Germans decided a different path to UK.

DASS on Typhoon is absolutely bleading edge, if you do not keep up, which is expensive, the whole system can become obsolete, it needs new software constantly for evolving threats, counter measures, decoys, sensors....

When Germany selected DASS a while after the other nations, there were still a number of DAS Systems inoperable, I wont name them as I am unsure if its confidential but again, if their past was to be believed, it was likely as some of the partner nations matured these systems, Germany stuck with what they had.

As far as the coolant leak, the coolant is bloody nasty stuff, when we "topped it up" there were hazmat suits and exclusion zones, but, you can drain it.

All the tranche 1 typhoons were delivered with dummies (weighed the same) which would not prevent the aircraft from flying (they also had the electrical connections) or from patrolling and attacking, just would be useless defensive!

I suspect its all hype, if it isnt leaking from a connector or pipe (which is a field fix) then its from a broken LRI which wouldnt ground them if you wanted to fly without DASS.

Embarrassing.

I'm still working out if it was an actual fire or a sensor, but spotters are saying he was screaming on the radio about his right engine being shut down, and they said he sounded panicked.

ETA: The guys listening said they're certain he was on fire from the terror in his voice.

The bottom line is that the US can not nor lets face it is wanted to be the worlds cop at Cold War levels. And while some of it may be perception, NATO members have to basically be flogged to even pretend to live up to spending commitments to DEFEND their territory.

Heck even the Swiss can't be bothered The Swiss air force: armed and dangerous, but only in office hours

Thats why this thread about a Franco/German fighter project is a joke. France IMHO would be way better off pairing up with say Japan who at least seems serious
