The fellows at the top are likely rapists
But you're like, "Mellow out, man, just relax
It's really not that complicated"

Guess what? The (lotta) Money-Quote:

It’s been astonishing. At my lab here at Berkeley, for a long time, we studied power and the abuses of power, and that led to the book “The Power Paradox.” You give somebody power and they become a little less empathetic, and they will speak to a work colleague uncivilly, and be vulnerable to the tendencies that make us harass women sexually.

And then about 10 years ago, we started to document similar things. You bring in a well-to-do person [to study] and they're less empathetic, they read people's emotions less effectively. You show them a film of children who are suffering in hospitals, they have a weaker physiological response associated with compassion.

And then we did this work on the ethical tendencies of the rich and the poor. We found upper-class people are more likely to lie in a gambling game to win some money. They're more likely to take more candy from a bowl that has candy that's meant for kids. They're more likely to blaze through a pedestrian zone when a pedestrian’s trying to cross the street.

And it astonished me and also my colleagues, the hate mail I got out of that, the cynicism, the accusations of being a pinko from Berkeley, et cetera.

Guess what? The rich really are different from everyone else — and it ain’t pretty

It brings up what we all knew already and the piece has a few more angles to offer. Only a pinko from Berkeley, eh?
Well. I could use some similar studies for the lulz, anything to share?

3 cheers to the people with a heart! Rich or not.

I know a few folks who are very well to do financially.
You would never guess it by their demeanor.
They are generally very chilled out and wear whatever clothes they find comfortable with no attempt to project an image.
I rode with a dude in his helicopter who was wearing boxers and sandals.
Multimillionaire.
He drives an old Ford pickup his grandfather gave him.
It's the one's who wish they were rich who are pretentious.

Kind of fails to account for the “bangers” who gives stray bullets not a single thought as those stray bulkets fly through walls and kill innocent children. Pretty sure those gang members aren’t well to do.

This study is just another example of not thoroughly researching all sides in order to validate an agenda.

In every class group there are sociopaths. While I don’t have enough interest to compile all the research, I’m willing to make an educated guess that less well off people engage in violent crime (i.e., no concern for victim suffering) way more often than those that are considered “well off”.

I think there is a flaw in your argument.

The study is about POWER, not money. Bangers, on the blocks they inhabit, are the power. It does not matter whether you are talking about the Italian mob, the Yakuza, the Triads, the various South American cartels, the London mob, or the various gangs which operate in inner city areas in America, the fact is, that the people who are members of these outfits have, or behave as if they have, a great deal of power, when compared to those who are not involved in those activities.

They are the ones who control the drug supply, they are the ones running the teams of prostitutes, they are the ones organising theft to order of cars, computer equipment, entertainment gear. They are the ones who run the streets where they live, and that is a form of power, and if they are willing, able, and equipped to kill to ensure that it happens how they wish it to, they have the literal power of life and death and the determination to use that power. There is none greater that is ever landed in the hand of human beings, than that.

It does not matter that these minor league gangsters are not rolling in money, because they live by way of their prestige in the communities they inhabit, by way of the cred (mostly fear) they have earned from the streets by way of their activities. They have power, not money, just power.

The study involved here, looked at people who simply had a different kind of power, financial power. But the behavioural traits, the casual disdain for rules, the belief that no matter what they do, they will not suffer consequence, is the same, because the power trip is the root of it.

Exactly. Saw this happening a few times myself, this phenomenon deserves a few studies on it's own.

I've put them into a diff category- 'wealthy'. We have a wealthy guy here in town who owns a burger place (with DAMN good, reasonable food).

You couldn't tell he won the lotto and owned the place just by looking at or talking to him.

The 'rich' drive their luxury car, and wouldn't stop to urinate on someone who was on fire. Haughty, nasty, rude, entitled bunch.

I own a tomahawk/peace-pipe.
It is forged from a rail-road spike.
It was given to me by the son of an Exxon CEO.
He lives in a cabin in the woods and enjoys the art of blacksmithing.

People might not flag for this as it comes from liberal Berkeley. But yeah, elites are rapists and abuse their power since time immemorial. And are less compassionate about it. I guess if you can do whatever you want, you start rationalizing reasons for it being fine. If you can't do it in the first place, then you might as well condemn it, nothing was lost to you. Of course there are finer psychological functions at play too, but yeah.

But does being rich make you a nutter who wants to eat faces? That's a different question, having money doesn't magically make that enjoyable.

When i read that:

Every year there are measurements from the United Nations about world happiness, and virtually every year, Americans score lower and lower. Are they measuring the wrong thing?

I had to think of Angela Merkels:

For a Germany in that we live good and gladly...(Hope translation is not too bad xD)
But who is "we"?
Is it the same Angela Merkel "we" she used when she said:

Because with that "we" she didn´t mean herself or the rich people that live in another world than 90% of the german population. Far away from the average people. Ok, they pay taxes too, but not as much as they could pay and as some of them are even willing to pay.
Kosten der Krise - Reiche Deutsche wollen mehr Steuern zahlen

(Some!) Rich germans WANT to pay more taxes, because they think it would be just fair.
Some of them, i guess the black sheeps under the greedy rich majority, even say that they "earn" too much money, just because they have money to "let it work". That the laws are made to make rich richer and that this is not ok. They say that they almost begged at politicians to pay more taxes. But as i said before, it is the minority of the rich people that doesn´t live in a "space ship", way above the average people. Without any knowledge about the average lifes people have to live, without even knowing what a bag of potatoes or a bread costs in a discounter, supermarket, a bakery or on a market.

And the "representatives of the people" do everything to serve the greedy 10%, because rich people have money and with money they have a lobby. Something the 90% of the population in Germany obvisiously doesn´t have. It´s a bit like the caste system in india. The rich and their devoted henchmen in the political theatre to fool the majority of the people just work for each other. Work together to take from the 90%, to give the profits of that reversed Robin Hood behaviour to the 10%.

We know now that greedy rich people show the same signs psychopaths show. They don´t know empathy anymore, for example. They are egomaniacs which think that everybody has to dance to their tunes. If they weren´t born rich, they mutate to characterless beings. The richer and greedier they get, the less character and empathy they have left. And they stay in their strange own rich world and only have contacts to other character- and empathyless beings, that makes everything even worse.

I know that even personally because i saw with my own eyes. I met a lot of rich people in my life and i just couldn´t stand them, almost all of them. Because they are kind of "wrong". They are not real, they are wearing masks. They smile at you as long as they want something from you and you are in the same room as them. But that smiling is wrong, like these beings are. They can´t trust nobody anymore, because they know that in their world almost everybody is like they are themselves. And that is why they are wearing a nice smiling mask with a wrong smile all the time. To use people to get richer and richer, among other things.

They sit with their fat a$$es on their money and don´t allow others to own even the dirt underneath their fingernails, which most likely comes from hard work and not from "letting (inherited)money work". They dodge taxes the 90% of the average people can´t dodge, because they don´t have the money to pay tax dodger specialists which do the dirty work for them.

But they love to use the infrastructure the 90% paid and pays for, love it to make more money with their (often workers exploiting) companies that use this infastructure, if they own one or more. If not, they love to race with their expensive cars about the Auztobahn, with 300kmh. If they get caught, they pay the fine and a lawyer from their small change pocket and keep their driving license.

They even can dodge taxes up to around 500 millions of Euros and get caught. Like in the Hoeneß(FC Bayern) case, these numbers are in the room but the "justice" just stopped counting at, if i remember right, 35 millions. And then he was "send to jail". To an open prison(don´t forget that he was sentenced because he stole 35 millions from the pockets of every german tax paying citizen!!!) where he instantly got the job of the "Hausarbeiter" for the first six weeks he wasn´t allowed to leave that "jail"(normal open prison rules in Germany). A job you normally have to earn first, in jail (by showing good behaviour for months, for example). But "working"(cleaning the floor in the morning and giving shampoo, soap, toilet paper and toothpaste to other inmates, once a week, for example) was too hard for rich Uli, so he suddenly had heart problems. Attested by Müller-Wohlfahrt, the since ever(two generations now) doc of Bayern München. So he could chill in the bed of a prison hospital and didn´t have to move his fat a$$ for the first six wekks he wasn´t allowed to leave that open prison.

After these six weeks he left early in the morning, picked up by a FC Bayern München chauffeur, to "work" outside of the prison and he had only to sleep "behind bars", for the rest of his prison time. Remember, 35 millions the "justice" was willing to let him bleed for. While reporters found numbers of around 500 millions. But if you are a "poor f*cker" who get´s caught without a ticket on a tramp and can´t pay the fine(if you could pay the fine, you would maybe have paid for the ticket), then you end up in prison faster than farts leave anuses. That means, if you have money, you are almost in "god mode".

But it seems that they know what many people feel too, the reversed Robin Hood times might be over in the near future(selling guillotines and ropes might be a good future business xD). That´s why the rich beings live far away from the "rubble", behind big walls with their own security services, everything observed by surveillance technique 24/7. Because of the fear from the revenge of the exploited people.

That´s why the really rich buy own islands with own airports, own harbors and even submarine docks. Guarded by their own military, mercenaries. I bet with an own satellite connection to watch the area. They are not only driven by greed now anymore, now they are driven by fear too!

Pretty sure you can review any violent crime statistics and my closing point will be validated (those less well off, thus with less power, commit way more violent crime with no regard for the victim(s)). I’m sure you can find the FBI statistics site as easy as I.
