With no factor for population density which should have an effect. More sightings in less densely populated states should indicate more activity which would indicate better odds for any one person.

Bad website. They have some explaining to do.

yeah. they treat the state homogeneously. when most sightings happen in certain areas and nearly none at all in others. and many times ufos are reported on multiple occasions by the same individuals. a guy looking for ufos will probably see more ufos than a random who just happened to see a ufo. so how's it account for that aspect where several sightings might be from one individual.

I grew up in LA and used to drive out to the Palmdale/Lancaster and Mohave deserts at night to try to see any type of either experimental or UFO craft. This was in the early to late 90’s. The only things I ever saw in many trips was both the B-117 bomber and F-117 fighter. So disappointed. But it gave me time to be alone in a near pitch black desert, except for the stars and moon, and time to listen to Art Bell for hours under a big sky. I miss those times!

After reading through here I figured out that actually reading the page I'm looking at might have helped me solve my misunderstanding

Something screwy. Or am I not understanding it?
It says the most likely state is Wyoming, with "odds" of 20,500.
Least likely is Maryland, with 107,100.

What's going on with Florida? Texas?

I wonder if population density is considered in those "odds."
Surely so because California has a "total sightings" of 23,419 but odds of 168,700 whereas Wyoming has "total sightings" of 2,854 and odds of 20,500. I'm going out on a limb here to assume they mean a 1 in 20,500 chance off seeing a UFO.

In Salida Colorado, sightings are so common they have UFO parties on the deck.

That's actually in San Luis valley.

Not to mention the way the author phrased the first sentence for the intro "Since the dawn of time..."

I thought everyone knew that using that phrase was like dry snitching on one's own lack of veracity.

No?

Well if that didn't do it, im sure the super amazeballs bar graph did.

Why am I not surprised about California? Oh right Area51 is there oops.

Well, Nevada, anyway.

It would be interesting to create a map of sightings and they overlay it with a map of military installations.
