What we are seeing is the general decay of culture and morals in our society. Regardless of what the TV executives personally think, they still must produce shows that people will watch. If nobody watched Saturday Night Live, the show would go off the air. There are still a few high quality TV shows left but they are getting fewer and fewer. The reason crap TV shows get made is because more people watch crap TV shows than high quality shows. Remember a show called "Playhouse 90", well it aired back in the late 1950's. It did some great stuff (Requiem for a Heavy Weight, Flowers for Alegron, etc.). Well it went off the air because nobody watched it. Place the blame on both sides, the TV audience and the TV producers. The TV audience could get higher quality shows by demanding higher quality shows. Of course, the TV producers could make higher quality shows and raise the cultural level of the viewing public. However as you pointed out, that is not in their way of thinking. I don't think that the TV industry executives are "in league with Satan" as such except that their god has "Federal Reserve Note" and pictures of dead presidents on it.

This is merely showing that this world is and has been slowing lossing grip of morality and whats right and whats wrong. I remember back in the days when mini-skirts were banned from TV. Remember them days anyone? Or when underwear and lingerie commercials were handled like the "Fruit-ta-Baloom" (sp) commercials were with the guy dressed up like a fruit salad...rememeber? The Jetson's, the Flintstones, Bozo the Clown......etc. Know the people are so 'de-sensitized' that watching literal death on TV rarely turns a head......sad.

Turn the TV on around your kids this day and time and its a case of flipping channels or plain turning it off. Very sad state that we, as humankind, are slowly but surely falling into.

Catharsis is a term which applies to enabling a person to have an experience without actually engaging in the act.

There is a story about life during the black plague in Europe; A woman is in her home one day and her son asks for permission to go out and play she informs her son that he has chores to do and once he is done he can do as he pleases. The boy get angry and because of the extent of his tantrum his mother sends him to his room and informs him that today he will have no supper.

That evening her husband comes home prepares himself for dinner and as he sits down for his meal his notices his son is not present, he asks his wife as to the boys whereabouts.

She explains to him what happened earlier in the day and that at present there son is in his room, after dinner and once he has relaxed he goes to the boys room to check on him.

The boy is awake and is in bed he asks his son in a paternal way what happened to him today and why did he not come for supper?

He informs his father that he had been sent to his room and denied this days supper because he had caught his mother having sex with another man.

After hearing this the leaves the room, hearing the sound of his wife doing dishes in the kitchen he enters that part of the house.

He enters the kitchen collects a knife walks up to his wife, calls her name one more time and as she turns places the knife through her heart.

Afterwards he cleans the kitchen places his now dead wife in a sack and places her body in from of his home.

Three days later is the day of the week the collector comes to pick of the dead from disease.

He sees the bag opens it and notices the woman inside was killed, he knocks on the door to which the father of the boy response. The collector inquires as to what happened to her and the father explains that she committed adultery.

The collector informs the father that he will have to file a report and as a result of that report two weeks later a police officer appears a the house.

The officer speaks to the father who explains that he was informed by his son that his wife had committed adultery, to which the officer responds that he is required to speak to the son.

The father asks him to wait a moment as his son is out playing, the father returns with the son and police officer asks what had happened the day his mother died.

The son confirms that his mother was engaged in sexual intercourse with a man who was not his father and that he had seen her in the act. The officer then rights a comment on a form in his possession stands up and bids the family a good day.

There is a show called "That 70s show" on regular network TV. It's apparent that while all the member of the cast are not really under the age of consent, the show presents to idea that sex between teenagers is OK as long as your
parents do not find out.

As well are there daily marijuana sessions between the principal characters (who again play the role of teenagers).

Its interesting when the issue of morality is brought up especially with respect to a comparison to the past.

The inclination seems to always point to the idea that in the past the morals were well above anything we today accept.

But that is until one actually begins investigating and comparing to aspects of history we do not always talk about. A good example is a thorough review of Freudian literature some of the images of people in those days are quite startling. Entire sections of women's faces missing in an apparent effort of there husbands to mark there territory.

One can look at even further in history and find babies born in torture chambers who spent there entire lives in agony.

And lest us not forget the matter of slaves whose' daughters by the month after there first menses were expected to do much more than feed chickens, if she turned but dead it was no problem as they said in those days the soul was divine (they were pagans)

Pagans are defined as any faith outside a certain system of belief for the record ASE???

As far as cannibalism ASE would recommend you consider the potential advantages of labeling a human as an animal, again with respect to the past.

Think of it this way ASE if you do what they show on TV to the extent characters are depicted doing it you would probably become HIV

unfortunately it is not just a lack of morals. It is more than that. It is the fact that this behavior on TV and in music is accepted. Especially in music. I used to think very low of pop music in the early 90's and late 80's. As a young kid I thought that all these pop stars were teaching people that seduction and obsession with sex was a good thing. Then I grew up and saw that it was getting even worse. Now it is about as bad as it can get. Take the Spice Girls for example. "If you want to be my lover, you better get with my friends."

Now that line may not mean what I think it does, but it is the fact that I THIHK this way that makes is wrong. For it could be depicted as something less sexual, but to me it is not. To me it is a stark reference to casual sex among friends. That to me is degenerate.

The music videos you see are full of sex and most of the big pop stars today don't even know how to make a video without selling themselves out to sexual deviancy. That to me is also degenerate. Elvis sold sex in his own way but he did it without coming to lows. He did it naturally. He didn't have to degrade his being and act like a slut. All he had to do was to be who he was. That would be no different today if people like Madonna didn't hit the scene with the never ending sexual limitations. Ever notice that she sets all the trends???

She is always the one to take it to the extreme. Why is that???

Does she have some sort of destiny in this pursuit???

One must wonder about people like her, and what their agendas really are.

Just as we must wonder what the agendas of the TV shows are. Madonna wasn't trying to sell to the public, she was trying to shock the public. So are many people today. They follow her because they see what fortune it brings. It is natural for people to like controversy. If one were to see a couple having sex on the subway or in the school yard, than one would not turn away. One would stare. Why???

Because it is amazing. People are left in awe. Eventually the awe becomes standard, until the standards become old. Then other trends set in. This is the never ending cycle of seduction. Seduction in acceptance and awareness.

What we need is a movement to say "Enough is enough."

Yet that will never be, because people just can't get enough. The materialism is like a plague. This materialism is what kills the minds and integrity of will and perception. For when something is in need or in want that something becomes more important than reality.

Toltec made a good point, we idealise the past and assume it was better then than now, but was it?

The barbarity of the past made committing acrime a far more dangerous thing than in the present, and as a result crime itself was less.

I have watched the degeneration of TV and movies and felt afraid of the future and for kids who see this as normal. The problem is in the structure set up around movies. Sex = money, shock = money, money is the prime mover behind the movies, and so the lowest common denominators are present to attract the most money.

But just recently TV and movies are starting to change, sex is being reduced, as there seems to be a public backlash, like this post, against the direction we are heading.

So there is hope ...

But have you noticed the new distortion?
Buffy, Angel, Harry Potter, those 3 witch sisters, etc, demons and the occult are starting to take over where sex leaves off...

Interesting observation... However, you'll also notice that these shows/movies aren't as much about the occult, as they are about doing the right thing, and heroics, so actually, I'm rather pleased to support them, vs. the examples given in the original post in this thread. I'd much rather have my future kids see Buffy, Harry Potter, or Sabrina, than see that scene from Sex and the City, or that Saturday Night Live skit.... Man I'm old...I reemmber when Saturday Night Live could be watched by children and it was funny.....

It seems mankinds morality is like the ebb and tide of the ocean. Sometimes too high, sometimes too low, but its always been there.

The same force that is respocible for our present decay of morality has always been there doing its utmost to cause the downfall of the human race. Its just very obvious today with the advent of Electronic communication( TV, Radio, Vidios, etc).

If the current trend is not stopped we will find even more horrable activities acceptable. The desensatising will continue to the level at which mankind will not be able to recover.

Guess I'm the oddball here.I have always been in favor of no censorship on t.v. I'am more than capable of changing the channel if I find something offensive.
Also SNL and Mad t.v. are late night shows,most kids are asleep when they come on..If something is funny its funny,doesn't matter if it is racy or graphic.If it is a good movie,I don't care what they put in it,let people be the judge if they like it or not.

There other networks that people can go to.ABC has the family channel,discovery,history channel.Its not like every channel is bad.T.V has lots of choices,no need to get upset because something may be offensive,just change the channel.

Its bad but you have to pay for HBO, and you can easily change the channel. If I see two gay men having sex on TV I change the channel. Some stuff on TV is out of control and should'nt be there.There is a decay of morals in the nation, but we should'nt ban every single obscene thing we see, just the realy bad stuff.

I don't find that Rober De Niro thing racist at all, its quite funny.

Not to long ago the issue of violence was correctly seen as getting out of hand in the media. It is plausible that because of that, the media is presenting more sexual content and doing so to an extent it replaces the inappropriate way it was displaying aggression.

Presenting indiscriminate sex can cause as many deaths as presenting indiscriminate violence per year.

Making that apparent to the media seems the best route.

It isn't about censorship. That is not the point. It is about the will of reason. We here are asking, "Why such lows???". Not, "Why such shows???"

I don't think it is a low. There has always been questioable t.v. show. If you rember the old MASH show they had a black guy named spearchucker jones,or all in the family.There has always been sex and viloence on t.v.
I for one love bathroom humour.I also like movies with graphic viloence.It is no big deal its just t.v.
It is all entertainment. It is not real,that is why I wonder why people get so worked up about it.

It is about the lows.

We here are worried about where these lows are taking us. It is the constant and never ending cycle of trends that are breed by the want for something controversal and provocative that is becoming a menace to society. It is the fact that people are accepting that which they would have never even dreamed of even two and three years ago.
