Dude...i like it just fine. All i dont like is the logical fallacy that you present as i regards dismissing Voltaire from a statement he made unrelated to free speech and the subject of this thread.

You ignore the context of both thought and time in presenting an argument that, if we are being honest, is hotly debated by academics both for and against. Then have the audacity, after not even remembering the details and having to search them out, to proclaim your slander as the singular truth. Even more, you used this logical fallacy to support another by throwing out the baby with the bath water. Instead of just simply arguing for the lack of free speech itself youd rather focus on your opinion of voltaire so you can dismiss him entirely.

As an American i hold speech to be aninalienable right. Any action against that is tyranny. Laugh if you like. But im not defending criminal charges against a guy telling bad jokes to people who wanted to hear them.

I fail to see how this is a crime. People screw around all the time. That doesn't make it criminal.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the Brits doubted it would happen too and oh lookie.

They don't have the same system that we do and the Constitutionally guaranteed right of Free Speech.

Are you okay with all the free-speech shutdowns on campuses?

Not if it's a public college.

I just find it interesting that "Nazi" is punishable purely on an ideological or even scatalogical level because "Good chap, many Brits fought and died to defeat the Nazis, I say!" yet here we sit watching most of the European countries that sat on the doorstep of the socialist hells that brought us the Nazi Party, the Holodomor, the Cold War, and even the arrainged ouster of the UK from Hong Kong become more and more like the political system they once despised, fought against, and died to defeat.

I am listening to people that have literally, and I do mean literally called for the death of people, get on their moral high horse and say someone deserves to be arrested for having their dog do a nazi salute.

It boggles the mind, but shows how frightening these people can be.

They are totally arbitrary in what they find offensive, and feel incredibly righteous as they call for violence or laws against the things they dislike.

Making jokes about nazis must lead to arrest, but acting like nazis and censoring speech you disagree with is to be celebrated.

The same with pushing for the policies of Stalin and Mao, that killed millions more than the nazis.

Its insane.

Can't imagine what they'd do if a dog crapped on their lawn.

probably try to outlaw them.

That would be the last straw.

It will be war and not end well for them.

Need to get all So African on them.

Kill them and take their lawn.

This is Scotland. We've got a law against that sort of thing:

THE DOG FOULING (SCOTLAND) ACT 2003

Says you hate nazis but willing to live under the same type of nazi rule to protect people from accepting the past. Makes sense.

This is tyranny and injustice within a supposed liberal democracy. But as has usually been the case, the lack of outrage over this and other tyrannies of this sort testify to the slow death of free speech, and the human rights, democracy, and liberal tradition it necessarily supports.

ah geez, sparky, get a grip......don't keep repeating "gas the jews" on a public forum, that's it.....he's making the killing of millions of jewish people by slowly suffocating them, a joke, and repeats it over and over......not exactly an end of freedom of speech.....maybe, JUST MAYBE...there are so many stupid people that would take that seriously, due to the RECENT ACTUAL HISTORY of a lot of stupid people, TAKING IT SERIOUSLY AND BEING FINE WITH IT.

There is no effort I can see to wind UK members up.
The UK just happens to be demonstrating some worryingly fascist tendencies that need to be called out. Those that actually value liberty are quite right to criticise the UK.
The UK laws set such a ridiculously low threshold for 'hate speech' that it gives licence to fascists to manipulate them and use them for purposes for which they were not intended. Be very careful about how far you will cheerlead for the UK authorities. They don't have your interests at heart.

I raised this issue with meechan in another thread on freedom of speech
and how the UK is going to the wolves

what does this mean for UK battle rap , or other art forms
music , art !

all it takes is one person to be offended by something and you are being tried for hate crimes !

the hate crime law is based on logical fallacy , that if a person says A, B , or C in a public setting , that will lead another person to do X, Y or Z .

How can one person be held accountable for the actions of others unless directly influenced such as manson etc
it's ridiculous

I mean in UK battle rap I dont know how many times ive heard , nazi / jew jokes, or racist bars about racial stereotypes , sexism , mysogny , misandry , transphobia , xenophobia , its all there , fair enough the vehicle for these types of bars is just shock value and are only used to get crowd reaction , it is basically weak writing but still , people should be able to say anything they like without fear of repurcussion from the law. As for other humans , thats a different story , if you say some hateful # then expect people to hate on you, and just because you can say something doesnt mean you should in certain settings.
in this case all it would take is for anyone external from that community to view a battle rap video and become offended
then report it as hate crime.

Funny, I dont see these people cheering for this guys arrest calling for the arrest of left wing comedians that say offensive things that could lead to violence.

I feel that free speech should allow any jokes on any side, and not only have fdefnded vulgar comedians on the left, but find many of them quite funny.

But again, we see that the people one the left, only they should be allowed to tell offensive jokes, anyone welse must be censored

exactly we are a society free to slander anyone who appears right wing and we can do so with impunity because nae # likes a fascist

but as soon as one person makes a joke which is right leaning

All hell breaks loose and society literally goes mental !

of course not....and neither would you, and most others....but last year there were a bunch of Nazi's carrying tiki torches openly chanting about getting rid of the jews....you don't think that mob would?.....there are southerners that still talk about lynching ni***rs....you, of all people, should have an understanding of "mob" psychology, raising fear, and promoting paranoia of the "other".....

Its because the goal of these laws isnt to be fair and equally applied, it is to censor people they find undesirable.

We see this over and over.

Right wingers must be censroed on facebook and twitter, but rabid left wing anti semite and racists like Louis farrakhan are celebrated by them.

Any non left wing perosn that makes fun of a womans looks is a pig that needs to be shouted down, but respected left wing people including journalists can make fun of someonel like sarah sandders looks and its hilarious.

Just like it should be illegal for a right wing firm to data mine using small parts of facebooks data, but Obama is a geniius and celebrated by the very same people screaming the loudest for working with facebook itself to data mine.

Its not what was said, it is who said it.

Ironically, just like in the socialist and facsists paradises in the past, the very people that cheer this on and want offesnive people aressted will find its to late once they too ared targeted and arrested for saying offensive things.
