Mark Meechan, of Coatbridge in Lanarkshire, was found guilty of communicating a "grossly offensive" video in a Scottish court on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old vlogger taught his girlfriend's pet pug to react to the phrase, which he repeated 23 times in a video seen by the court.

Meecham, a self-described "professional s*** poster" and free speech advocate, said the video had been taken out of context.

Some comedians have came to his defense.

Comedian Ricky Gervais rallied to Meecham's defence, writing on Twitter: "A man has been convicted in a UK court of making a joke that was deemed 'grossly offensive'.

"If you don't believe in a person's right to say things that you might find 'grossly offensive', then you don't believe in Freedom of Speech."

I think that that whole video and this whole thing is only for the most part just proof that pugs are pretty dam smart. I mean if he learned that whole paw up salute, and just from watching videos on the tube of old Nazi speeches and parades the guy made him watch, and while egging his little doggy brain on.

That's a pretty smart dog, as far as dogs go, cant even get my dog to sake paw even with a dam turkey leg waving over his nose. The whole thing is a bit humorous, even that he got in trouble over it. That to is humorous.

Hindu's have used it for millenia but the Germans reversed it. Like the bible and the satanic version. When reversed it creates evil according to some ancient cultures.

It's very sad to witness the demise of British values. Can't say we were not warned, though. After two world wars, the Nazi's eventually managed to conquer these great lands through politics.

The issue was not the dog the issue was the "Gas the Jews" comment, its not about saluting its about publishing a video of a guy repeatedly saying "Gas the Jews" over and over again.

He published this, its against the law in the UK to publishing anti-semitic material, the police state they had 160 pages worth of messages that supported the claim that this was anti-semitic and that was why they pursued this case. The gassing of jews is not in my view something that is funny I don't think this quite qualifies as a "joke". I don't actually think that this guy realised that what he was publishing was putting him at legal risk, I don't think he even thinks that it would lead to criminal prosecution.

The problem is that this has been viewed millions of times and as such that makes it a public interest matter. As such the police have to investigate, a crime has been committed because they have evidence to support that this was the publishing of material that stirs up religious hatred and it was found to be grossly offensive. Reading about this that is why the court found him guilty, they said that they believed he knew what he was doing would cause offence.

Hell outside the court afterwords the guy was interviewed by Tommy Robinson!

For me personally its not a free speech issue its the issue of deliberately publishing a video of a guy saying "gas the jews" over and over again.

I guess it comes down to do you agree with these laws or do you not agree with these laws, for me personally I am ok with Scottish laws relating to hate crimes. But then again I am not publishing videos training a dog to respond to "Gas the Jews"
