Verbal abuse is an act of commission. Not a crime of motivation, which is the subject of this thread.

So is this just something that the person the verbal abuse was directed at that triggers the investigation... or is this something a perpetually offended snowflake can over hear and call the cops on me?

I ask because when I am have a pint with friends the insults will flow fast and furiously... and nothing is off limits, mothers, wives, skin color, sexual orientation...

I don't want to live in a a country where you can stand outside a mosque or church and shout bigoted abuse at people who just want to prey. Thats the kind of thing these laws are for.

Emphasis added for possible Freudian slip?

Just can't see how this is a "thought" crime?
I do agree that this is ripe for abuse though.

Struggling to think of a decent sized country where the state isn't the biggest single employer.

Exactly.

A hate crime is when someone commits a crime against you because of your disability, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, religion, or any other perceived difference. It doesn’t always include physical violence. Someone using offensive language towards you or harassing you because of who you are, or who they think you are, is also a crime. The same goes for someone posting abusive or offensive messages about you online. If it happens to you, you might be tempted to shrug it off. But if you tell us, we can investigate and stop it from getting worse - either for you or someone else.

All one has to do to get a criminal hate-crime investigation started on any citizen of the UK is accuse them of offensive language, online harassment and abuse. Harassment and abuse includes speaking, whether offline or online. This is indeed thought-crime.

The bit you left out, this extract included earlier in another thread of the same.

Verbal abuse,

'Verbal abuse, threats or name-calling can be a common and extremely unpleasant experience for minority groups. Victims of verbal abuse are often unclear whether an offence has been committed or believe there is little they can do. However, there are laws in place to protect you from verbal abuse.
If you’ve been the victim of verbal abuse, talk to the police or one of our partner organisations about what has happened. You’ll find a list of them on our How to report hate crime page. Even if you don’t know who verbally abused you, the information could still help us to improve how we police the area where the abuse took place.'

Not that big a difference at all, UK/USA just a sensible measured approach.
No person would want to be abused verbally day in and day out, and most other right-minded people wouldn't like the idea of anyone being verbally abused day in and day out either..and as you can see the police take a statistical, strategic stance to the matter as well. You're blowing stuff out of proportion.

I think yours (and your government's) approach to reality is at best naive, but at worst dangerous. The continued conflation of speech and violence risks turning the best way to divert and avoid and de-escalate violence (speech), into violence itself.

No, it means if a bunch of neo-nazis gather outside a jewish shop and chant 'gas the jews', then they can be arrested for a hate crime.

It means if a radical islamic preacher comes to the UK and preaches killing the infidel, he can be arrested for a hate crime.

Yep, it is all basic English. How can you not understand it? Maybe read it again and think a bit?

Issuing death threats is the crime, in both cases.

A man kills his wife, out of hate. Another guy despises his ex-boss, who fired him. So hate motivates him to 'get even'

Many crimes are motivated by hatred, of some kind.

They want to establish that 'race-hate crimes' are much more severe than normal 'hate' crimes!!

This looks/is like a form of sharia law soon to be followed by patrols reporting incidents......Yup that is a legal reality now. wow

3,395 people across 29 forces were arrested last under section 127 of the Communications Act 2003, which makes it illegal to intentionally “cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to another”
So just walking down the street smoking a cigarette could be cause for reporting an incident according to this!

This is terrifying loam. That so many in the UK can't see what they're becoming is even more frightening

A neo-liberal government is an authoritarian government. Their core ideals may be liberal, but the mechanism in which they enforce those ideals and "punish" non-believers is through violence by the state.

Thank God we have partisan American ideologues to keep us safe. I mean, here are us Brits not being arrested for thought crimes and still regularly #talking on FB. It's almost like your entire perspective on this topic is literally garbage and unfounded nonsense.

Still, it's the internet and #-stirring nonsense is very popular.

The description given by the metropolitan police trumps your snide little refutation any given day of the week, almost as if it was “literally garbage and unfounded nonsense”.
