A great mind is gone, and I'm blessed to to have existed in his lifetime.

First thing that jumped into my head was...

If there is a conscience after death.
What would Stephen believe in now.
And what would I ask him.

Which is faster?
"The Speed of Light"?
Or "The Speed of Thought"?

Lastly,
Thank you Mr. Hawking.

I hope he came to know the Lord before he passed. It saddens me greatly to see someone so intelligent deny the existence of God when he has had evidence all around him for so many years.

Hawking himself would disagree with that statement:
Buzzfeed

"My disabilities have not been a significant handicap in my field, which is theoretical physics. Indeed, they have helped me in a way," Hawking wrote in a 1984 essay, saying that illness gave him the time to think through physics problems, rather than lecture or perform administrative duties.

So would those who knew him

"He thinks about the universe differently, due to his physical disability," Kip Thorne, a physicist at Caltech, said of Hawking in 2013. "That enabled him to make discoveries that no one else could make. And he has. They have shaken the foundations of physics."

My links keep going corrupted and I put this thread in only 8 minutes after it was reported.
I don't know what is going on in ATS - but if you got it first - hats off to you.

RIP Hawking...

Was the movie about him any good at all?

I hear ya, I can't star or refresh pages. It's lagging badly. But you got it in there. 👍🍻🤗
F&S yours too.☺

Edit:
I saw the documentary about him if that's what your refering to? It was touching to me, as it shows a young man. A good looking guy with a humour I was unaware of. I highly recommend it.

I’ll have a beer with you in heaven if you’ll have one with me!!

There are few rock stars in science and he was one of them!

May he see the face of god that he wrote about!!

RIP

Wrote on the other post?

So sad to hear of his death but he took science so beyond any other ever living soul-he deserved the rest for his tired body and mind.
He truly awed all with his inspiration and lack of pity for himself in addition to his ability to think without writing down all his concepts.
I doubt we will see another of his amazing mind.
Hope he has found that much deserved peace.

Very sad news. Hawking was a true legend of our times, much of modern cosmology revolves around ideas he developed... at least he was able to live quite a long life.

I wonder what was going through his mind at the end?

He was good as an asshole on Big Bang Theory too. It was cool to see him as more than a 300 IQ brain on wheels.

Let's hope all his kit goes to a good cause and not to a museum. MND affects children too and the equipment is mighty pricey. Although his legacy will be about black holes; his greater example is showing how how life can go on under the most severe of physical disabilities.

Wow, just saw this on a news clip.

Rest in peace, and may you have the answers now, to everything you pondered.

The universe just became smaller.

Like what?

Think about how there is no God and where he is going if anywhere?

He's dead, according to him.

He's not even a black hole.

I pray for his soul but would it matter to him or would he think I'm wasting my TIME?

Decaying matter, a bunch of entropy.

Hope you reconsidered, steve.

It'd be funny if Jesus came out of the tunnel of light and smiled. Hawking would be momentarily gutted.

Amazing that he lived so long with ALS.

I have seen several others who died within a few of years of diagnosis, including my first wife.

God speed to Mr. Hawking, and hopefully they will find a cure for this terrible disease.
