The status quo exists because it is the optimum compromise between Chinese strategic goals and the strategic goals of its neighbors. Reunification is not in the cards, nor will the peninsula be "denuclearized."

Kim potentially gets recognition as the de jure leader of an independent Korean state, a possible seat at the UN, a formal end to the Korean War, setting him up for a possible Nobel, and an influx of foreign investment. What's in it for us?

Actually it can be. You see the steps are laid, all that remains is the official declaration for such. Here is how it will go down: Trump shows up, they have a meeting, talk, shake hands, take a picture. In the back ground, without the USA, as it is going on right now, there is a treaty that is crafted between North and South Korea, along with China, and then all that would be required would be for the US to sign, say a sitting President who's ego can be stroked and the man manipulated. The US signs, and thus ending the Korean conflict, with no conflict, than all of the things that were in the original armistice would be null and void, there would no longer need to be a US military presence of such a large number, in Korea. In fact with the signing of the Peace Treaty, the country of South Korea, could ask and demand, and be within its rights to ask the US to leave.

A peace of paper is not a peace. Our allies want us there, and not on their own islands. Kim will never let go of his nukes; they are what brought the United States to the table... again.

They have been there before. Kim thinks he can .com Trump. So far, he appears to be right. Release of the prisoners should be a precondition. Let's see if it happens.

This is crazy. Frankly, I never thought I'd see the day. Let's hope Trump can convince Dear Leader to liberate his people from the clutches of socialism.

I wouldn't bet on Trump being as stupid and easy to lead as you obviously believe him to be.

That said, when it comes to all this hullabaloo... Unless some things have radically changed under the surface that we are being kept from seeing (This actually has a pretty high likelihood of being true) I'd be inclined to believe that we will see that status quo you mentioned remaining in force.

There's very strong historical precedent which makes it a pretty solid bet, and it will continue to be a solid bet right up until the point where it stops being a solid bet with no real warning or indicator that things are about to change to anyone not in the loop.

Is this one that time?

I don't know

I think that due to other things happening at home and abroad that it's quite a bit more likely to be than any other time we've seen up to now.

But that doesn't mean much.
