The article that quote came from said that pilot entered service in May of 1918 and died June 18th. That happened to him in just a few weeks.

The career time of a World War I pilot was measured in minutes, hours and days, not months and years. They flew wooden frame aircraft at low altitude within the firing range of a heavily armed enemy with no parachute or armor.
